I'm looking at a Subaru Impreza 2.0 RX Auto and realised that its only a 4 speed gearbox does anyone have any experience with one as i'm concerned that as you get up to 80mph it will start to struggle and scream being only 4 gears.

Thanks in advance

I used to have a citrien ax that had four gears lol

Im assuming the gear ratio would be diffrent mate.google the model and see what parkers guide says about 0-60 and top speed and you could gauge it from there

Yeah not a lot going around on this model, top speed 113 mph 0-60 is shocking but that's not issue right now I just want to know if it struggles on the MW being only 4 speed ;)

How come an auto? Better results with the 5speed manual RX. I have the manual and it has no problem crusing at 80-90mph on the motorway :)

Had an 2.0 RX auto for about 18 months now. It has no issues cruising on the motorway. The auto box gets you into 4th most of the time whilst driving around as a default. There is a manual shift option allowing you to select the gears - keeping it in 3rd helps to get a more responsive drive with no 'thinking moments' or kick downs when you put your foot down.

The motor is limited electronically to 126mph but allegedly :innocent: it is pulling just over 6k revs at that point and with a 7k redline there is not much more to go

I don't mind either but there are a couple black options available to me at local dealers and both are Auto and its a black version i really want. I just wanted to know how it performs at higher speeds being only a 4 speed box

Awesome thanks for this, so how is it sounding/performing at around 80mph does it just cruise or is it a bit screamy?

Jay762 This maybe a silly question but does the RX Auto have the distinctive Subaru 'Burble'?

Posted

Not really - the manifolds are different and there is no turbo so the sound is different. However it is nothing like as hollow as the Honda or Toyota in line fours.

At the moment I have a standard exhaust which is on its way out so the sound is currently improving but will be replacing with an aftermarket unit which will eliminate the mid section resonator increasing the levels slightly but nothing offensive.

Saying that though the STI Hatch I had previously wasn't as 'burbly' as some of the blobs bugs and classics I have encountered - however it only had a prodrive backbox attached to a standard Subaru system. There are a couple of conversations on here about the possibility of 08 onwards cars all having equal length headers which means no burble - unfortunately I never got as far as investigating the manifold on the STI

Ah ok i was kinda hoping it had it as there is nothing better than hearing the burble, you instantly know what it is. I used to own a WRX bug and that sounded awesome. I guess the N/A RX auto is a different bag.

It is quite different to your previous motor. I believe you will find it a softer ride with more body roll plus the steering rack has a different ratio to your bug.

After a quick drive this evening I can say that whilst cruising the car tends to use between 2K-3K with 50/60 both being 2K and 80 being 3K

here is the throttle position cruising at that speed, you can see there is no great load on the engine (this was on a medium uphill gradient as well)

Here is what it sounds like

Awesome thanks Jay762 exactly the kind of info i have been looking for! I don't get to test drive until the end of the week but I'm looking forward to it now!

Can I ask why you went for the RX Auto?

Posted

Because the plan is to hand this car to the inlaws when we get some boost back in our lives - they can only drive autos now and want something that will tow a caravan no issues.

Whilst this car has all the great benefits of Subaru 4WD and chassis so reassuring handling, control, stopping etc It is not what I would call a 'drivers' car - there is a flappy paddle column mount I am looking at - sourced from JPN - which would make the driving experience a little more interesting but overall the whole setup is softer than the STI so still has elements of compromise.

Why are you looking at this car?

We are selling the family car and want something smaller and to make some extra money on top, I like my cars whilst the wife isn't all that bothered so I have to comprise as she will drive it more than i do and tbh I just can't bear the thought of driving around in a fiesta, focus, micra and the likes. So I started to look at the Hatchback version's of the scoobies and saw the RX and RC versions, I originally wanted an RC being a Boxer diesel but they are over budget so I showed the other half the RX and to my surprise she really liked it, i'm a massive fan of the that particular shape more so the sti version (which I hope to get after this one) an after digging around found a few that where a comfortable distance away one that was even a 5 minute walk away but they both happen to be the auto version, coming from an auto X5 I liked the thought of another auto so we decided we would reserve it for a test drive and thats when I started asking around to find out if it was any good.

I did have concerns about its 0-60. What is the pull like on it? or is it just a steady acceleration?

I have a 2008 impreza RX for sale if your intersted ? STI rep for better looks aswell :) £6000ono

james

Managed to find it in the for sale section, Whilst I like most of the car there are a few things that i don't like so much unfortunately and its over budget especially with it needing a little TLC on the body work. Thanks for sharing though hope you sell it soon.
