Brakes on my99 wagon turbo are......crap.

Featured Replies

So I have the standard 4 pots on my newly acquired 99 U.K. Wagon. They just seem a little.......****. There appears to not be very much braking happening unless I proper stamp on them is this normal I'm used to more modern cars as off late. Also under braking there's a vibration in the pedal that appears to match the revolution of the wheel so I'm thinking a warped disc? To back that up if I drive around at slow speed sub 10mph there's a squeak again with each wheel revolution that gets quicker as I increase speed.

Any thoughts are appreciated. Also what's the best way to check all four pistons are working? Take the calipers off the disc and press the brake pedal?

Cheers.

Frank

Yep take the callipers off to make sure the pistons move in and out OK. You might find one has seized. Check the discs for warpage too.

Compared to more modern cars the brakes are pretty poor. decent, disk pads and lines will help. i ended up going 6 pot setup

How much meat have you got left on the pads, when mine got low they were wooden feeling, faded really quickly and gave the wheel a good wobble when applied, fitted new pads all was well again

Went to see a friend recently who was sorting his brakes out when I got there, he said one of his pads wore down more than the other and was taking off corrosion from the Pistons. One both sides it was the side to the inside of the wheels that was the problem.

Cheers. The pads have only seen around 10k mileage and look around half worn. But I'll have a good look over them when I take them off. I think new pads and discs will happen regardless. It had new calipers around 5 years ago and the mileage isn't really that high. I think they need a good recon. The whole brake system.

Cheers.

Check both pads on the same side are worn by the same amount and if the outer is more than the inner etc

So are the discs on mine 295mm? With the 4 pots? Are mtec discs any good or just go for standard brembo ones from motorfactors?

Ta.

Frank

I got m tech ones and been fine

I did have Piranha but a seized piston caused at least one to warp. Now trying MTEC dimpled and grooved.
