Help identifying problem please !

Recommended Posts

Hi I have just had a big problem occur in my 1997 subaru impreza turbo 2000 around 130k miles on the clock, had a recent engine rebuild but no receipts to prove it

I have pics of under the car after taking off the plastic cover and here are the symptoms...

Heard a loud crunch while driving about 25 mph changing into 3rd gear, then a very loud clicking sound, i pulled up immediately thinking it was either my gearbox or clutch, possibly even the front diff, if this car has one, got a tow home. when the car was tested again about 3 days later it sound great when sitting with the engine on but as soon as you start to drive off there is a loud clicking/ scraping noise, the car struggles to get into gear and appears to be jumping every 20 yards, not sure if it is trying to get into reverse but it sure feel like it. anyway after a few  yards I drove it home and not touched it since.

have noticed oil leaking from what appears to be under the turbo but I think this is just because the cover diverts the oil to this area,

gearbox oil seem to be nearly empty but honestly don't know how to fill this up, cant find any cap to pop oil into it but what is there seem to be very clean if not brand new,

There seems to be no oil on the bottom of turbo so i guess the oil that is leaking seems to be coming from what looks like the power steering column? but doesn't explain the problems with the gears.

all liquids seem fine. oil is a little black but no bits or other substance in it, coolant is coolant only no sllme also

Hi mate to add oil to the gear box just take the dipstick out and fill from the dipstick tube

Does sound like a dead gearbox to me synchromesh could be worn. which could mean a lot of money I believe it is cheaper to buy a refurb Gear box then have it fixed but don't hold me to that. But you might be lucky with just adding some oil in the gearbox. So try that 1st I would

But on the Brightside..... Welcome to the forums! :D

quick question my transmission type is ty752vn5ba . does that mean i can only fit this gearbox or is there a way around this as this model seems a little bit too expensive for my budget atm.

is it true if i use a different gearbox i will need to get another rear diff? any help would be appreciat

I think you can fit any gearbox if its from a turbo of the same year of your car. But to be on the safe side I would recommend these

http://www.scoobyworld.co.uk/catalog/

They did a full engine rebuild on my car and know what there talking about far better then me. And there from your home city :)

Hope that helps. And sorry for passing the book :)

I have found a sti/p1 gearbox with matching rear diff  number TY752VBCAA an import would the propshaft be the same generic size or do you think i would have a few problems. a mate of mine assures me that it will fit

only £150

I wish i had enough money to get it fixed via a specialist but times are a little hard on the money front

I cant see why you would have any problems. When I have changed many parts they are pretty much like a swatch watch really. Take parts off and swap them around. So cant see why that would be any different, and with the same code. And I believe the old classic shape STI was 5 speed gearbox. But would double check that make sure it's not a 6 speed

And I meant send them an email or ring them and see if they could tell you if you can use any gearbox. But as I said before I would take the risk myself and see if it fits with that one you have found. I can't see there being a problem, but some things like this you never really know until you get the old one out. And why it was out I would also do the Clutch :( And I know you said the £ can't go to far. And believe me I bet there's not one person on here who has not been there mate. But doing the clutch at the same time will save money, and I'm sure the garage will tell you the same thing. Unless the new gearbox has the clutch in it they can check it I guess before hand. :)
