  1. Hey I have recently bought a Subaru Impreza GX Sport Wagon and sometimes when I put it in 4th gear it grinds while driving, I am just wondering if this could be the gear box failing or does the car need more transmission fluid? I always check that my foot is fully on the clutch when changing gear. Any help is much appreciated, Thanks.
  2. Question.. I have an 08 impreza 4 speed 2.0R with the "side to side" automatic shifter.. Can i upgrade the shifter to the "straight up and down shifter" from a newer car say? Newer gearbox? Reason is i also have an 2017 astra st and i like the shifter style better than the puzzle piece shifter in the older car.. I want this style..
  3. Hi All Wonder if you can help... I have owned my Subaru Wrx 300 on a 2005 plate for 3 years. Its a bit of an unused car as I use my work van mostly, so I only put around 1500 miles a year on it. Total of 72,000 on the clock. However it has full service history, part dealership mind. When I first acquired the car I took it to my local Subaru dealer for the airbag recall to be done. I purchased the car from a independent garage in Birmingham originally. However they did a so called complementary check on the car at Subaru. They then informed me that I required a new clutch because there is a noise from it, despite the fact it doesn't slip. However the noise, didn't go upon replacement and I was told it was the clutch release bearing which was also changed. Then they tried new gear oil. I was feeling a bit peeved off, as I have a new clutch and same noise. The noise to describe is a whining noise through the gears changing up and through 1st 2nd 3rd, not so noticeable in 4th or 5th gears. Also sounds like an old mini metro going along in reverse. Anyway I got part of the payment for the clutch from the warranty company that came with my car, so not such a bad blow! However to this day I still have the whining noise, car drives fine. I now get the car serviced from a local independent garage, well its been to two, both I know personally and have done work for, as I Install security systems. One guy immediately drove it and said its the diff bearing, the other mechanic said the gearbox needs to be reconditioned. I would like it to be fixed so to speak, but need a proper diagnoses. Have any of you had this issue, comments and opinions really appreciated. Many thanks.

  5. I have a Subaru hatch WRX-S (Narrow body) and I am keen to upgrade to 6 gears. Running 400bhp (I know not safe) and am awaiting the inevitable bang from my 5 speed gearbox 😂 anyone recommend a company who can take care of this? Parts, fitting the lot. Im from near Brighton so south is ideal. Aware it’s a big job however I haven’t got the time to do it myself and from research the rabbit hole goes deep (axle, lower control arms, driveshaft etc etc 😢) and I will want it running ASAP once it does pop 💥 thanks in advance AWD fam 👌🏻
  6. Has anybody done the infamous 6 speed gearbox swap into the WRX hatch? Wanting to do this on my WRX-S hatch Any nuggets of wisdom? or recommendations for companies that can do this? Worthing based cheers 👌🏻
  7. Afternoon gents, is it possible to fit a 6 speed box form an sti hatch into a wrx hatch. Straight swaps?? TIA

  9. Hi guys I was driving my car and reved it under a bridge with clutch engaged after that the car doesnt want to go into any gear. It does engage in gear whilst car is off, as soon as you start it all you hear is TICK TICK TICK and you are unable to engage into any gear. Has this happened to anyone? P.S. It is not the engine.

  11. Hi, I'm looking for a manual gearbox for my 09 diesel Outback. The gearbox code on mine is TY758 V1ABB. Anyone got one for sale or know of one? It must be from a Outback not a Legacy or Forester. Thanks, David W
  12. Now my mapping is all sorted I'm thinking whats next this won't be for a while but I'm just brain storming. The car seems to rattle about feels like a track car with a lot of road noise and vibrations I've heard that the foam matting is good for solving these issues just wanna know if any other classic owners have tried this or if they know what I'm saying. Secondly i think i may need a 6th gear as i do motorway journeys a fair bit and wouldn't mind a non boost cruising gear to help the mpg , my car was originally a 1994 WRX import so does anyone know how i would go about getting a 6 speed? Thanks for you help as always :)

  15. Hi guys, I have started having this noise coming from my car when I give it the beans from a standing start. - sorry about camera work, started a bit late but didn't want to do it again as it sounds nasty! It only makes this noise from a standing start and the clutch, as far as I know isn't slipping but I'm not entirely sure what that feels like. Pulls well in all gears and no problems changing up or down, in general it's just fine to drive. Also, if I am gentle/ normal it's fine, no noise. I asked a friend what it could be and he suggested that it might be the throw out bearing but was only guessing. Would love some help on what it is, how to fix it and costs both if I were to do it myself or if I were to take it in to a garage. Thanks, James
  16. Hi Guys, Started doing some work on the new car I picked up and I've ran into an issue whilst bleeding the clutch. The car is 93 JDM WRX and when I had it the clutch bite was almost on the floor and I was getting the odd crunch on gear change so thought I'd start by changing the fluid to see if it helped. My master cylinder doesn't have a bleed nipple(or doesn't appear to have one) so I've bled the system from the slave cylinder. I've bled the system by having a bleeding kit connected to the nipple, loosening the bolt a bit and having someone press the clutch down, then tighten the bolt and have them pull the clutch up. Repeated this process and topped up fluid in master until the fluid coming through the pipe was nice and clean and as far as I can tell there is no air bubbles. Now for the problem. The clutch peddle does not return all the way to the top like it used to. Instead it pops back up about a third of the way maybe a little less and then you can bring the peddle up all the way manually but doing this there is a very much mechanical clunk. When then putting the clutch peddal down, it drops instantly with another mechanical clunk to the third of the way down point and then it feels like a "normal" clutch again with hydraulic feel. I think the clutch is working in the bottom part as with the clutch fully down I can change between gears smoothly (with engine off due to alarm(another issue but one at a time)) but I need to get the 2/3rds part of the clutch with no feel sorted. Is this down to a faulty master cylinder or does the pedal need adjusting where it connects to the cylinder linkage? Is it more simple then that and I have indeed got air in the system? Apologies if this a simple issue or repeated question - I'm a noob I will admit it but I'm trying to learn by getting my hands dirty. Thanks in advance.
  17. Hi folks, Our 2004 2.0XT manual - approx 40k and serviced - has developed a gearbox whine that starts a minute or two from cold and is getting noticeably worse. I've listened to it on a ramp and it seems to be gearbox rather than wheel bearing and is still there on the road when you slip it into neutral. Any positive ideas? We're a bit short of Subaru specialists in this area of Kent and I'm reluctant to give it to a general garage who will just strip down and replace things until it's gone away. Any pointers to the problem or specialists in West Kent would be appreciated Simon
  18. Hi I have just had a big problem occur in my 1997 subaru impreza turbo 2000 around 130k miles on the clock, had a recent engine rebuild but no receipts to prove it I have pics of under the car after taking off the plastic cover and here are the symptoms... Heard a loud crunch while driving about 25 mph changing into 3rd gear, then a very loud clicking sound, i pulled up immediately thinking it was either my gearbox or clutch, possibly even the front diff, if this car has one, got a tow home. when the car was tested again about 3 days later it sound great when sitting with the engine on but as soon as you start to drive off there is a loud clicking/ scraping noise, the car struggles to get into gear and appears to be jumping every 20 yards, not sure if it is trying to get into reverse but it sure feel like it. anyway after a few yards I drove it home and not touched it since. have noticed oil leaking from what appears to be under the turbo but I think this is just because the cover diverts the oil to this area, gearbox oil seem to be nearly empty but honestly don't know how to fill this up, cant find any cap to pop oil into it but what is there seem to be very clean if not brand new, There seems to be no oil on the bottom of turbo so i guess the oil that is leaking seems to be coming from what looks like the power steering column? but doesn't explain the problems with the gears. all liquids seem fine. oil is a little black but no bits or other substance in it, coolant is coolant only no sllme also Pics of under the car below
