Pommy
Running a 2000 year turbo 2000 ad wondering if it is feasible to run a non turbo bonnet or if anyone has done this before? Getting mixed messages while googling but most people say the big scoop and 2 side pods are just cosmetic. Although I thought that the left pod was used for cooling turbo? Can someone point me in the right direction. If this is possible I think I will then be taking the rear wing off and having the car a bit more subtle. Thanks
Tlag
The main scoop is generally thought to only be effective for cooling up to around 60mph if i remember correctly. However, I think you may run into overheating issues if you go for a scoopless bonnet. The cooler the air into the engine from the intercooler the better. As soon as you start pushing warm air around, you will get reduced boost and potentially running issues. The way to get around it is to fit a front mount intercooler. Not exactly subtle but if you painted it black, you may get away with it. The air vent over the turbo will help with turbo temps. The Legacy twin turbo dosnt have those vents so I cant see it making that much difference.
Pommy
mmm that is unfortunately what I thought, it it possible to replace the scoop with a grill or something like that? Have seen kits for the later models but not for GC8. Does anyone know of any?
Jay762
I don't think you would have a problem making one if you did choose to remove the scoop. As Tlag said go for the FMIC and you don't need the scoop - a grill replacement would then help to shift heat - ala drift / GT cars I would be interested in looking into the legacy comment - why no holes - is it due to more under bonnet space - perceived buyer of the legacy not giving it the beans as much as an impreza owner?? quit
Yeah you need to go to front mount and run a sport bonnet
Tlag
Jay, there's less room under a Legacy bonnet than an Impreza, so there's less room for heat dissipation. The later Imprezas don't have the two smaller vents, so I suspect they are purely aesthetic.
Jay762
aaahhh ok then does indeed look like that would be the case so if you do want to ditch the scoop fit a FMIC, replace the scoop with a grill and do away with the vents. - I suppose you could go the way of drift style bonnets and have fins in the centre to duct air away from the engine from the front intake but unless you have major engine mods which means running at higher temperatures this might be a step too far. and certainly not the subtle approach you describe / desire I know some of the modded impezas run a small intake / scoop on the filter side to duct cold air down to the engine intake so a cold air feed might be something to consider
Gambit
I have to ask why would you want to do away with them ? or are you after a sleeper looking car. Personally I like the vent's on your car and I love the power bulge of the scoop on the bonnet as you look over it from the drivers seat. I mean please don't get me wrong it's your car and I will always say do what you want with it, I'm just interested as of your plan to remove them :)
Pommy
Thanks for the advice guys. Think I will leave this idea for a while. Gambit there are two ways that I like my cars. Either loud and proud or sleeper. And I like the idea of a sleeper impreza. But that would mean a bonnet with no vents which isn't practical and spoilerless. So with that in mind I think I will leave it as is. And spend money and time upgrading elsewhere.
Gambit
I will say good choice then :D And thats fair enough was just interested to see what the plan was for asking :)
Miggs
i was going to fit a front mount to mine and disguise it so it just looks like a radiator then fit a sport bonnet to make it look like a non turbo, the 2 smaller vents have covers on the underside so they are more a visual thing than a practical thing imo, also if you have the alloy bonnet then weight is a factor but with a steel bonnet then adding the sport bonnet won't make much difference there i have also considered buying a small universal radiator fan and fitting it to the underside of the intercooler and wiring it up to a separate switch to pull the air through when required, i suppose you could do something similar with a non vented bonnet and a top mount, also i found this ebay link for the bumper which i first considered putting the filter down into the bumper for access to cooloer air, you could however fit one and get some metal induction tubing and run the tubing to the turbo to aid that, then fit one on the other side for a cold air feed for the i/c
Miggs
oh and a mate of mine has a 400bhp bug eye, when he bought it as a standard impreza he removed the wing off the back and it looked so much cleaner, then shortly after upping the power he was driving down the motorway and said it got quite twitchy, he now has the sti6 style spoiler and said it's made a difference, just food for thought
Pommy
Thanks Miggs, I have seen some photo's of classics without wings and not sure that I like the way they look. As I said before I like a car with a big scoop and a big wing or with nothing at all. After I have fitted my brakes and turbo timer I will then be putting a cold air intake system in. Just have to find the time to do all this work!!!
stants
Took my scoop off for painting today. On the left hand side mine has a seperate divider which would appear to channel some air towards the turbo. I like the look of the scoop delete vent but looking at the car minus scoop it looks a bit lost without it :-(
Miggs
you could also get bonnet raisers, they lift the bonnet at the windscreen end which lets more are channel through the bay, they are a bit marmite though, personally i like them on a car that has the need for them, they look stupid on a 1.4 corsa lol
Jay762
yup agree with Marmite opinion of lifters - if you need to get air out I prefer the modified bonnet option - the engineer in me always looks at them and thinks something isnt fitted correctly
Gambit
I don't like Marmite....
