I have had my impreza sti 330s hatchback for 7months now but it seems to be burning loads of oil. I have put in nearly 3 liters in this time to keep it topped up. Any ideas as if this is normal? Going to do an oil change soon and keep an eye on it with no hard driving.

Wotcha and welcome

Thats not normal - I didnt put any in mine in 12 months

Cheers.

Yeah it don't sound normal. It's been okay the last month or two its sort of stabilized. Even at heavy driving it shouldn't burn this much.

Mine was with quite a bit of heavy driving - no real change in level

Don't notice any smoke only when I drive hard it blows out when I change gear. Plus only done about 4k in miles. Usage as in oil? At first I put in millers 5 30 but now got Shell helix in 5 40.

doesn't matter what brand of oil you are using you shouldn't be getting through that much in that small amount of miles - even driving hard - maybe in an endurance race but not hard road driving, if you can see blue smoke coming out on gear changes look at a compression test (hopefully not but you may have ringland failure so oil is coming past your rings into the chamber) or it could be your turbo but that would be more of a constant smoke emission

Hey guys. Don't think the car is mapped. Like I say it's stabilized in the last two months but I agree something ain't right. The car drives okay and don't notice any smoke just the tailpipes get black with oil after a week of cleaning. Anybody know a good specialist in Newcastle area I can maybe take too?

I took my forester to GMD Durham for a service and they were great for me. I'd have no hesitation recommending them. It's next to the arnison centre

You have revolution up your end as well - given the recent write up in Jap Performance magazine I would seriously consider getting it mapped - not for the power but to ensure you avoid ringland failure - I had been assured by Subaru that the Prodrive pack taking it to 330bhp did address this but the author of the article claims not - you also get to add in functions like launch control, flat foot shift, downshift throttle blip and antilag should you desire :)

Cheers lads got my car booked in at revolution this Friday hopefully they can sort the problem out. Was thinking about taking it up to see Andy forest for a remap like you say just for peace of mind so I can enjoy the car cause at the minute its Panic stations. Had a bit of smoke coming out of it this morning when I started it up but it's fine now been back out in it twice.

I think an Andy Forrest visit would be a good thing ;)

I'd mabye try getting the garage to use a quality 10w 40 oil when they do the service as the (slightly thinner when cold ) 5w 40 might be seeping past the valve stem seals /rings prior to start up .

if you're getting the oil yourself speak to tim @opie oils he'll be able to help you decide which oil suits your needs best (tbo I dont know what oil is best for a hatch) if you mention the club you'll get a discount as well ;-)

Nice touch with the Xenon lights on your hatch

Got me thinking I want some. Bet you miss it.

Spoke to someone from opei oils and he recommended 5w 40 for the reason from start up i only do 2 miles to work he was a very helpful guy. But yeah I get where your coming from cause once the car is warm there is no smoke but yeah when cold starting in the morning you get a bit of smoke. Think I may phone him back and mention that good shout. Cheers lads only new on here but very helpful forum.

Yup I miss it - but.... there will be another

Opie Oils very helpful, with your two miles to work keep an eye on the Battery as it may not be charging over short distances like that - I know with school runs we had an issue - but then that meant I had to specifically give it the beans on a weekend - for a genuine reason (because of course I dont own a Battery charger...cough  cough ahem shuffle) :P

Well roll on Friday so I can see what the guys say in revolution. Will keep everybody informed.

The 5w 40 oil will flow better due to being that little bit thinner when cold , so probably suits your needs better .

Also after thinking about it The valve stem seals seeping are less likely to be a issue on a boxer engine due to the horizontal set up .As the oil doesn't sit on top of the valves with gravity pulling it down once you turn it off or let it idle .

best of luck and keep us posted , fella

Hey guys just had my car looked at today and they said everything looked and sounds okay. They couldn't do a compression test as they didn't have there gadget to do it but got it booked back in to test just to make sure everything is sound. The only thing is they put in millers trident 10w40 semi synthetic which they said they use all the time. Will this oil be okay?

That doesn't sound too bad to me mine uses around 3L every 2000 miles but i am trying to keep on top of it till my replacement engine is finished by having a full service every 2000 miles :(

God that's not good. Don't fancy putting a new engine in mine. Hopefully it will get better. Like I say it's been okay in the last couple of months
