Looking for an Impreza R

Hi there,

I have recently joined the forum so please excuse me if this is in the wrong place.

I know this might be a stab in the dark but I am looking for an OK condition 1.5 litre Impreza R, I don't want a 2.0 litre, STI or WRX as insurance cost is much too high for someone of my age, I have been searching around on Auto Trader, motors.co.uk, eBay etc and I have a basic idea of what is out there, but I thought it might be worth looking into specialist forums.

Does anyone have one of these in decent condition for sale? Would prefer the hatchback body shape however I'm not too picky on the body shape, as long as it's not a wagon :)

Anyone know if these cars are fairly easy to run as well? I have done research into the car however I thought the owner's club would be a great place to ask for any help :) anything I would need to change on the car straight away? Or are they generally reliable?

Any help into this would be much appreciated :)

Thanks

Wotcha and welcome - not owned an R myself but if it was the hatch version you get I would put an STI spoiler on the hatch as the original is too small for the shape of the car IMO, also some bigger rims / standard STI rims to fill the arches.

members on here that have the 2.0l models may be along to talk about day to day ownership, there are some threads already on the forum from members asking questions so feel free to have a browse and read up on some of the topics

IIf I remeber rightly Becky22 had an R hatch, had an issue but that was more to do with a duff mechanic making things worse

Thank you :)

I would love to get a 2 litre model but I can't get insured on one because I'm a first time driver, and the Impreza R seems like a good choice, not too quick, ok mpg and I've always loved the look of the hatch back versions. They also seem like a great car to open me into perhaps further subaru or other jap car ownership.

I found this example on motors.co.uk, what do you think? 96k on the clock and looks like its been given a fair makeover in comparison to some of the other more standard examples I have seen.

Yeah that was my original plan; buy a standard one and then change all the panels needed to make it look like a WRX or similar, I was thinking something similar to the one I posted but maybe with a little bit of lowering? Not like fully stanced lowered, just a little bit to close up those arch gaps? Maybe some black wheels similar to rpf1s or te37s maybe? And does anyone know of anyway to get more mpg out of these? Seeing as they're not exactly fast might as well try to squeeze a few more miles to the gallon out of it! Don't really know what to do to it though!

I'm 17 at the moment so am literally just looking at something for a daily for my first car, I wasn't really planning on spending much, just really wanted to do some stuff to make it look better and make it more efficient, if I'm going to spend this amount of money on a car then I probably want to keep it for a few years to make the most of the money, I'm probably not going to spend much on the car, just some efficiency upgrades and then later on maybe switch it for a WRX after a couple of years if I don't get into any troubles with it :)

I think that approach is great. Me personally I wouldn't bother pimping it out and save that money for your next car but your choice.

Your insurance company might not like you dressing it up like a WRX as it would make it more desirable. Have you got some quotes yet? Worth getting some via go compare or one of the other aggregators before you start looking (unless you're loaded)

dont worry about the panels too much expense for no gain ;)

extra mpg will be all about power versus weight so lightweight or removal is way to go, thinner tyres will provide less resistance and therefore get better mpg but at the loss of braking power so I wouldnt recommend that :o

black wheels will look smaller on the car than they actually are (ask any lady about the slimming effects of a little black number :D ) graphite grey looks good on some colours - all depends what you go for I suppose as white or silver rims look good on a blue motor

super unleaded costs more but does return more mpg

keep us posted with what you decide

Thanks for your help guys,

I have gotten quotes from compare the market at around 2k for insurance, which I didn't personally think was that bad in comparison to other makes/models I have looked at ('11 Fiesta @ 1.5k,  MK4/5 Golf at 1.5-2k depending on condition, Corsa D @1.75k), And yeah I didn't think the stock body looked too bad, I just thought that it might look better with a little more aggression added to it via new spoiler, lips etc. Are there no engine mods that may make everything work a little cleaner? I want to make the most out of this car so any suggestions are taken on board. Yeah I was thinking something like a red or black body with gun metal or dark silver RPF1s or TE37s, maybe not the real thing at the moment but something similar at least, and maybe 30-40mm of lowering depending on wheel sizes just to close up that stock arch gap a little, yet still be able to easily clear speedbumps and keep the ride from being perineum splittingly hard  :D I'm really not looking to do much to this car in any way really at all, I'd be surprised to spend more than 2k on mods, just want this car to last me long enough until I can afford an STI hatch :)

Will keep you posted on what I decide to do if I do get the Impreza R
