22 mpg Posted November 20, 2014 Share Posted November 20, 2014 It was a bit of a tongue in cheek statement and I definitely wouldn't try it on dry roads for fear of the above. I just thought it would be a good idea to know what to expect should I end up going sideways on a patch of ice. So when I found my works carpark empty and full of snow I gave it a whirl. I did a similar thing with my scooby when it snowed last year, thats how I discovered how easy it was to turn the car round without actualy going anywhere lol. Dogconker Posted November 20, 2014 Share Posted November 20, 2014 I know, in the snow when I had front wheel drive cars I actually used to use the handbrake to destabilise the car as it's easier to control a front wheel drive in a sideways slide than if it's just going straight on. The DSG gearbox was ok once I got used to it and the car handled nicely for a front wheel drive. Not in the same league as either of the Subarus I've had though or the Escort for that matter. I had a couple of problems with it which put me off. It burned oil like a 2 stroke, so I took it in for an oil consumption test and was told it was within acceptable levels so the garage charged me for it. To cut a long story short, I was proved right in the end and ended up with a replacement turbo under warranty but Skoda uk's attitude throughout was really poor. The local Skoda dealer I found ok to deal with, it was when I dealt with Skoda uk directly I had problems. I found their attitude really arrogant and unhelpful. Luck of the draw I guess. Yes, I'd read about the 1.4 drinking oil....is that the only engine of theirs that has this problem, or is the 2.0 octavia vrs blighted by the same problem? Others range from 10-39 years old at the time of ownership! Got it when i was 17 at college and having just passed my test my dodgy car mechanic/salesman uncle got me the fiat for 700 quid. lol it was terribly unreliable. It was shameful tbh. Incidentally my best car was a 99 v reg toyota avensis 1.8 petrol not a single fault in 4 and a 1/2 years. Sadly written it off on black ice.
