ChrisD
Hello all, i am buying a new car in April 2015, my heart has been set on a subaru Impreza WRX 2.5 but realizing it will take up most of my money from running costs, i can't lie its putting me off a bit. having never owned or drove one why should i but it? My costs i have worked out are... £60 fuel a week (Based on RON 98 @ 12K Miles) £2500 insurance (Sounds high but i'm 20 and it's the best I can do) £500 Tax (I love the hawkeye look so 2.5L it needs to be) £400 Tyres £40 MOT £300 a year servicing bits (filters, oils etc) then the price of the car it's self on top. (Which covers warranty from where I'm buying it from) anyone got any advice? i do really want one and i cant find any car that's cheaper that can compete with impreza on performance and reliability. I can afford it, i just need to be sure its worth the majority of my cheddar!

I can afford it, i just need to be sure its worth the majority of my cheddar! Have you had an insurance quote on a 2ltr blob? That'll be cheaper initial cost, tax and petrol and probably insurance [emoji6] If it makes you feel better I always thought a hawk looks like a seat Leon from the front [emoji4]I couldn't bring myself to pay 500 tax...just makes me feel sick thinking about it. Lol. I love my Subaru. No other car has made me smile so much...I've been doing 100 miles a day this year and every time I get in it and turn key key it brings a smile to my face...even with a 50 mile M25 drive ahead of me It isn't as comfortable and quiet as other cars but it's soo much more fun. Hit 3.5k RPM and yeeeehaaaaar [emoji16]
ChrisD
I am considering it, i mean for the price difference in can afford to get it sprayed the colour is want too. Black!
JusNoGood
Can't you just buy a black one? There's plenty around [emoji6] You can spend £700 on a WRX and get it from 225 to 270bhp very easily [emoji16]
Snoop-y
Hello all, ...£2500 insurance (Sounds high but i'm 20 and it's the best I can do) Try to quote as an additional driver with your parents or something. Ohh boy If I could afford to have a Subaru when I was 20 ;) If this will be your first car be very careful. I always wanted an STI. This car is a legend ( at least for me ;) ) Put a big smile on me every time I drive it. The lovely boxer sound... I had stronger car as well but nothing to compare to an STI. Go for it. You won`t regret that I promise
Mystery_Machine
Definitely worth the running costs, have you tried the specialist insurance companies like Keith Michaels for an insurance quote? and yeah Black Blobs Rule ;)
Jay762
go for an earlier model and put a bit more aside for tyres ;) we get a discount at Adrian Flux, as a forum member try them for a quote
ChrisD
Adrian flux is only one I can find for below 6 grand. All other specialists have a minimum age of 21, 24 or just can't do a good price for a 20 yr old. And yes first good car, Ive had a classic mini, citreon c1 and an astra... Not really comparable

mfnick
Don't get a Hawk! Save a bit of money and get a 2005 Blobeye. Might even be able to get a STi one which will save a bit of money modding a WRX with STi parts as everyone seems to end up doing. It has the brill DCCD gearbox and the much more reliable 2l engine as well as the Hawk interior. It's basically the Hawk model but with the more reliable engine and obviously looks different, though not a massively and the Blobs just as good looking IMO. Plus if you get one made early enough in 2005 the tax halves. If you're getting a Hawk you really, really have to look after that engine, they are known to go pop. Talking £2k+ repair bill if it happens.
DaiP
If you can afford it do it. Like the old cliche. Never regret the things you do, just the things you don't do. Mine puts a smile on my face every time I get in it. As for insurance, I put my missus on my insurance and it brought it down, I know it sounds daft but try adding additional drivers to your policy, at your age adding one or more parent might bring it down.
ChrisD
Tried that, it's still painfull. And cheers guys!!
stants
Or look at finding an import, avoid horrendous tax brackets [emoji51] I'm not sure but I think the jdm cars kept with the 2L engine as they prefer it
bitman
just buy an 'old' banger till you have more NCB and getting older so you can then buy an my heart has been set on a subaru Impreza WRX 2.5 otherwise you just foul your self and are funding the greedy insurance IMHO
tom_gr7
What about a non turbo 1.5 or 2.0, will be cheaper on the insurance n all that.
Gambit
In a completely biased view Yes! ;) But I wouldn't skint myself to run a car though mate. :(
stants
To be honest I've not found running a subaru as finally ruinous as any other car. Admittidly I'm not 20 anymore and I doubt I'd have managed to get insured at that age
JusNoGood
It is more expensive to run that my wife's Honda. Lower MPG and higher servicing but life is about having fun and enjoying yourself and not saving your money so the government can nick it off you when you need care or die....b@5tards...where's that rant thread
Tony22b
Hi Chris, Ive had a Hawkeye for 3 years now 2007 in Black. yes the tax is crap at £500 but ive had 3 scoobys now and i am biased the Hawkeye is easily the best ive had, other than servicing & upgrading things ( my choice) ive had no problems and as for the 2.5 being a crap engine i cant say that myself like anything its how you treat it. regular servicing is a must & use decent fuel. Tony22b
Afterburner Raptor cat back exhaust. Hel Braided brake lines all round, uprated fast road discs + pads, Silicone coolant hoses, uprated air filter & Ive just put on some RB320 18'' wheels. clutch is 1 years old but a genuine clutch all the oils have been changed diff, gearbox & engine. Cambelt was done last year. 76,000 miles as i said out of all mine this 1 is the best. Hawkeye front end is the best for me, my STI will have to be a hawkeye aswell.
