If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all.

Duncan mapped my car back in April and I've had no problems like many other people have already pointed out.

Why is it ok to say someone is good but not that they are bad?

There was a company setup a while back that was flash mapping cars, despite repeated warnings to owners people went to them for a map. out of 20 cars they mapped 7 blew up, 3 of the owners left subaru ownership because they couldn't afford the rebuilds. Would you want ot hear about bad things or not?

at the end of the day you takes your choice and you pay your money

O totaly mate, although i tend to hear alot of the inside track of what problems people have claimed to have with clinic and lets say they are being extremely economical with the truth ;)

Have I had the odd issue at times? yes, have I need to do anything but ring em and drop the car up with em to get it put right? nope. They ever rebuilt someones engine under warrenty due to ringland failure on a forged mahl piston.

hahaha hull scoobs, there funny, only site i know where if you say a good word about a specific tuning company (in this case clinic) you get banned instantly. Make of that what you will.

I think you've hit the nail on the head each mapper seems to carry some what of a reputation good or bad. Simon Roe trusted Duncan with his customer's before he past away, so make of that what you will :) . I think it's best to go with gut instinct or get quotes and choose which way you want to go. Talking about mappers seems to become a touchy subject everyone has an opinion on everything.

I'll be sorting a list of mappers soon just because we get so many people asking about garages and mappers. I'm not biased to any mappers Simon was always spot on with me and I've not used or spoke to any since he's past. Tell a lie in did speak to Duncan about a member's forester being mapped but was about a year ago. I think like anything best just going with who you feel is right for yourself and the car.

:)

It's not just mappers, specialists are exactly the same.

Biggest issue i have is i've seen dozens of people find out the hardway why you need a decent mapper. I've been around subarus for heading towards 15 years now and seen mappers and tuners come and go. I've been lucky enough to know and talk to alot of the more well known subaru owners with some of the big track/race cars.

It also seems to you can't have an open discussion about things on forums, either for legal reason or it becomes a slagging match or if on facebook people just get banned when they put up the other side of the story, let me give you an example.

After market ECU's, there a ball ache to setup to run like OEM, cold start and idle are particular areas that take alot of work, cold start is the worst because once the car is started in the morning you have to leave it over night again for the.

Car came into a tuner running crap, idle was a mess, cold start was crap and yes you guessed it was running an aftermarket ecu. Was a Motec M800, not bad for about £3000 at the time. Car was a 03 plate sti had decat, panel filter and motec, nothing else. He wanted it running better and more usable as a daily car.

Motec M800 is a race spec ECU and simply put was massively OTT and not needed for the spec (given the OEM drivability affects) so the customer was recommended to replace the Motec with a standard ecu and ecutek map, sell on the motec and fund the rest of the work that way.

So thats what they did and walked away with a car they loved driving again, mega happy with the car and £100 in their pocket in money they got for selling the motec on to dave roe.

Fast forward 2 years and they sell the car on with a wedge of receipts for work done etc etc. The receipt for the removal of the Motec is spotted by one of these pop up 'specialists' the new owner takes it to and of course without knowing exactly what and why it was done they start making accusations of ripping people off etc etc. when the reality is very very different. That one was on Facebook.

The issue i have with Open source is it is not only ripped off ecutek software from the US but it has also allowed anyone to set-up and map away whether technically competent or not. Typically these mappers learn to map at the expense of the customer, local company was setup near me they mapped 20 cars we know of, 7 blew up during mapping and the customers got zero compensation, 3 of the 7 were forced to sell their cars due to not being able to afford the repairs.

The final point to note is alot of these type of mappers do road mapping, they have no insurance and no tech backup. The customer is happily driving along thinking they are insured by their own insurance when in reality they aren't, if the police pull them over on one of the high speed pulls they will be prosecuted for driving with no insurance etc etc or od forbid they had a crash there own insurance would reject their claim and report them for driving without insurance.

I get alot of stick for supporting Scoobyclinic, but when ever i hear something i tend to go an ask whats cracked off, 99% of the time it turns out not to be as stated and either customer didn't like the responce they got (how to you tell someone their headgasket has gone without upsetting them?) or faults have been found that need sorting so bill is larger than expecting (so if customer says he wants a new roll bar and gets a price for that but they find drop link bush has gone should they ask if the customer wants the bush done on the drop links or leave them with a duff bush?).

I know you've been around a long time longer than myself I've not been busy on other forums but I know you're one of the nicer guys on forum's :) . So I'm not trying to say you're wrong. But just trying to not have argument's start about mappers mate. As you have said and I see it a lot there is enough forums and !Removed! Facebook where people can use for that sort of thing ;) I understand the forum should be used as a good source of knowledge and I appreciate your help on here with advice. So I just think it's best to show support for all of them and not become like all the other forum's. And let people Google.

I see the other month your name got dragged in on an argument on one of the page's don't worry nothing bad was said about you haha. I just watched for me pointless arguments. It's like trying to get my 7 year old son ready for school some morning's haha. But I have no issue with clinic yet some members will say diffrent as you will know. Same with Duncan. I've not used either but despite bad reputation for both there is good to so I think it has to be the choice or risk of those having work done. I'm sure some people take a cars with 150k+ on the clock get it mapped then it let's go and say it's the mappers fault. Or starv it of oil I remember seeing that a few years ago lol. So for me it's fine to talk about clinic here as it should be for other's hopefully with out upsetting anyone or falling out. For me we all share the same interest and the Subaru community is one of the best if not the best. Apart from a select few anyway :)

For me it's not bout good or bad reputation cos everyone opinion differs as has been sed it comes down to fact that if it was my first map I'd probably go clinic route but cos I want map tweaking I do see point n paying 660 quid for ecutek my brother got quoted 700 for as rs clutch release bearing n flywheel fitted on his focus st so to me 660 is bit pricey for wat I want I just wanted to no of any other respected mappers not using ecutek I. E duncan but yh it's down your personal choice n wat suits each person

I've only ever used 3 reputable mappers

First mapper was Duncan ,unfortunately my personal experience wasn't too good as a dyno a couple of months later showed it was seriously over fuelling. Which causes bore wash ,piston wear ,bad economy and drowns the power with fuel. I couldn't fault the fact that he gladly re tweeked my map twice for nothing but he was the only one who had to re tweek . However most of the newage scoobs on my local forum have been mapped by him without issue (so I assumed it was just my luck)

Mind you both Simon roe (rip ) and my current mapper Clive attowe tend to get right first time and make sure I'm happy before paying them .

Simon had got into mapping subarus after being involved in mapping the euro fighter aircraft. [emoji41]

Clive attowe has won more awards for mapping than I care to remember and has been mapping from his own dyno for decades [emoji6]

Forest ,Carr and Hepburn all seem to have a very good rep although I have no personal experience with them .

Right now that can of worms is open why don't we have a little discussion about oil grades as well [emoji16]

I used Duncan as was one of the only options for my car, open source is ok and if your not wa ting 5+ maps anti lag launch etc ut will be fine, admittidley you don't get as much support as you would do from a syvecs system or similar but for normal road use it's all good, drop him a mail and tell him what you have and your goals and ge'll advise what would be best.

Alex when you having yours done ? I need a tweak to my map and may as well try and fit in around you

It might have to be in the new year now. I need to get my exhaust finished as they messed part of it up and there is a waiting list to get that done.

When it comes time I will put a post up and see if others want to get it done at the same time.

Thanks

Alex
