Hello

Recently picked up an 09 2l n/a impreza hatchback. Always liked the hatchback and it was time to upgrade from a  mouldy 1.2 T reg clio!

Never owned a subaru and really didn't think I would ever own one! But so far no regrets at all!

I do want to get something bigger in the future but anything above 2 litre for me and the insurance is stupid money!

Any advice on caring/potential mods etc would be very appreciated! Thanks!

Hello & welocme,

They are pretty bullet proof if you stick to the service schedule and use quality oil,

As for mods what are you after more looks or handling?

Not much point trying to get any more power out of it, best way would be reduced weight, upgrade brakes and maybe look at stiffening up the chassis with a thicker anti roll bar at the back for a start

So far fsh and plan to keep it that way!

I do want to stiffen the ride and drop it a tiny bit.

But apart from that it is mostly looks I want to change. Splitter, rear diffuser, wheels etc. Any advice on places to buy from?

Also the exhaust is annoyingly quiet so that will need to change!

Cheers

To release the 'burble' requires a bit of work on a na car as the exhaust is totally different.

Have a look at@aucky and@jay762 as one has a wrx hatch and the other has n/a for some inspiration, parts are fairly easy to get, loads of specialists around, although most of the body kits seem to come form the states, so much hatch love over there

welcome.

drop in panel filter does make it rev easier.  couldnt find a front splitter in the uk so got some universal rubber from eBay for about £10, isnt bad.

fitted front and rear strut braces to mine, looking at getting whiteline anti roll bars and a cobra cat back exhaust then a remap this year

moved onto this from a 1.2 clio aswell, STI is the future plan but for now i love this car. only other stuff done is cosmetic replaced breather hoses, coolant pipes, painted some bits under the bonnet. under sealed the car and replaced all the oils, coolant and spark plugs.

11000 miles or so never had any problems.   had a bit of hesitation between 2-3k rpm but cleaned the maf and everythings rosey.

quick enough when its worked but i got it for the grip, i think its brilliant.

Cheers stants will check them out!

The standard exhaust from inside the cab sounds nice but only in higher revs and from the outside it's virtually silent whilst idling.

Might just be worth chucking a rubber lip on it for now, does look good on some cars.

Where'd you get your strut braces from?

If you get a cobra cat back let me know how it sounds man!

Haha you know how I felt then! Absolute shed of a car mine was!

The grip is decent even standard, though the hatchback gets a lot of hate? Don't understand why!

Are there many members/meets in the south West near Devon? Always good to check out others builds and get ideas!

i got the strut braces from eBay.  yeah i will do torn between buying a house or getting car bits.

hah yeah it was pretty bad found it quite reliable but the mot centres disagreed with their massive bills, still dont trust any garages from owning that car, for what they are made for they are ok. used mine driving to london regularly it liked that more than city driving strangely. it was nippy if you had nearly no petrol and took out everything you were carrying. passengers were dead weight.

yeah most reviews are poor. most i read were aimed at the interior, i dont need 15million buttons to turn the blowers on and put the window down. i like the simplicity.  they were right about the engine feeling underpowered but i put that down to the weight of the car once its had a kicking it goes canny.

mine came with cheap snow tyres and it handles well. can only imagine it would be alot better with good tyres

Wotcha and welcome - I always put PIAA windscreen wipers on my motors as a first mod much better visibility in rain than standard. I put wheel H&R spacers on mine to fill out the arches, a K&N panel filter many other options available, I will be putting a cobra system on in the near future when the current system rusts through.

Currently using basic EBC pads (£28 or so) which give decent feel with this system however these brakes do fade with a bit of spirited driving so I would consider braided brake lines and grooved discs with a flush through with 5.1 fluid

hi @Quinn allways good to see more hatchs on here,as @stants said your best off doing looks and handling on a na as you wont get much more power from it,i have had too 2.0sports na loved both but would cost thousand to get more power from them,i would go with a performance filter a nice exhaust someone like cobras sport will sort you out and make it sound nice,i have tien lowering springs on my hatch, not expencive and lower it about 30mm with out it getting so stiff it shakes your teeth out,any strut brace advertised for a hatch wrx will fit your car.the hatch wrx-s and wrx and rx all have same bodykit on but not sure about a l,have a look at pictures or put a picture of yours on so can have a look to see if its fitted with the same,if it has same bumper trim then this splitter lip will fit straight on https://www.tarmacsportz.co.uk/exterior-parts/08-10-wrx-cs1-style-front-lip.html just need to tell them you want the wrx splitter and not the sti one.

Will have a look, straight forward to put on? Ahhh life man!

You had a better clio than me haha I knew I wasn't going to be keeping it more than a year so it was ragged about and towards the end it desperately needed a service to the point where it'd be like turbo lag on the throttle and it'd just drink fuel. But apart from that I did have a laugh in it and like you said little weight in it, it was nippy!

I'm happy with the interior, I've been in new BMW's,ford's etc and its overkill i think personally.

Cheers Jay,

The wipers on mine actually stood up pretty well to heavy rain but I'll have a look, and didn't even think about spacers!

Gotta be honest I've never modified a car even slightly, only done the basic service and changed discs/pads etc so a lot of this stuff will be new, will be a good laugh doing it though haha

Cheers @aucky

Nah I know it's probably not worth spending the thousands on for power gains, stupid question but is a aftermarket air filter worth having on n/a?? I know in smaller engines it's pretty counter productive but unsure on a 2l??

I'll get some pictures up hopefully tomorrow

Thanks though for the advice man on the parts!

Mighty car mods did a test with subaru oem airbox and filter and a oem airbox and performance filter and an induction kit on a rolling road .the induction kit did worsed out the 3 and if i remember right the oem with performance filter in it gave best results but very little diffrence to the oem.but with a aftermarket filter in you can re use it so not having to keep paying out for new filter when it gets dirty.it wont hurt to put a better panel filter in.wouldnt bother with a cone unless you like the look of them.i had a expencive k&n cone on mine which got broke so i bought a 20 quid cone filter from Halfords and car drives just as well.am changing back to a oem airbox with a aftermarkt filter you can clean, but a wont be payin for an expensive one.

Na cost me three times it's worth in parts but first car no money for a new one and needed it running.  never did anything to it in 5 years till I got sick of garages and did a service and a couple small bits like starter motor. This is first car I have tinkered with an it's great I have missed out on this for years.

Aye but even an empty crisp packet slowed it down.

Exavtly don't see the point in all the fancy pointless crap. Ex's dad had some merc amg estate... Nice engine and smooth but for the money I didn't care for it. Endless buttons and settings even an electronic boot which broke if you did it manually. 0-60 was less than a second different to a standard Sti . Even my Impreza revs up as smoothly. Know which I would prefer

@aucky cheers for clearing that up! Cone filter I can take or leave so probably best to get a performance filter.

@Jamie_uk I take it back then haha

At least you didn't bin it and stuck with it over the years. Probably got your money's worth if you had it for that long though

Daft for the price you pay for it. But then some people love all the extras that they probably won't ever use.

Cheers @RpsChesterfield how's it going
