Oh crap , that belt looks a mess this time too 😏

The previous "specialist scooby mechanic" overtightened the idle pulley bolt when fitting the new cambelt on the bug . Luckily enough I spotted it when doing the rebuild and it was in the pulley that is attached to the tensioner bracket . So I just had the thread helicoiled,  when reassembling .

Guess you've probably done a bit of damage , so plan A and rebuild ?

Well finally got round to making a start today, engine is ready to lift out, everything is disconnected it's just a bit tight on the bellhousing dowels, but that's for another day, missed the heat of the day stuck in the garage, so I think the rest of the weekend will be spent in the garden not the garage 802bbb283188d38163f0c33a0c5607e0.jpg7fcf3a3ef17914d52289ccbd2b2cd1db.jpg

So, it's been pretty much a year since she came off the road, and it's about time I do something with her, so I have a replacement engine, fuel pump & a couple of goodies sat, need to order some gaskets and service kit, the brakes are definitely going to need rebuilding and I've misplaced the !Removed! bell-housing bolts.

But... I have all of Feb of to at least get it running and a MOT on it so I can start using it again, so with any luck I'll be back in boost before long!

Any one got a set of bell-housing bolts laying about? Haha

Managed to get it into the garage today and pulled the front end down a little more to check on some welding that I knew needed doing, needless to say the year sat out has done absolutely nothing for it and now I'm trying to decide on the best option to proceed.

Today was a messy day, ordered the lower tie bar last night(5pm) and it just turned up now!(4pm) pretty good going by my reckoning.

So, rather than sit a stew all day I decided to make a start on at least tarting the front end up a bit

So first things first, dropped the front 'C' frame off

Needed a bit or love so attacked it with a grinder and flappy paddle, now bear in mind I'm not going for "mint condition" here, just trying to spruce it up a little

So that's all ready for some paint throwing at it, may even underseal it too with it been where it is.


Then I moved onto the front end and gave that a little TLC as well

It all got a good wire brush down and some love, then hit with some hammerite straight to rust, about 3 coats~

Also spent some time doing other things, then as I walked in the door tonight my delivery arrived...

Will see how tomorrow goes and see if I can't get the rot cut out etc and at least this new one sat in place!

Hope your enjoying the read, and whilst I am a Mechanic I don't work on cars. My stuff is more brute force and ignorance! Lol

Good stuff , nice to see you're getting stuck in and making the most of having the front end off . Think a lot of people would be surprised at the amount of rust they'd find around the lower cross member and under the rad 😏

Looks like you've sorted most of the rust to future proof it a bit now though , chap 👍

Cheers buddy, yeah I didn't want to waste an opportunity like this, an I must admit, I was shocked how bad it was and I'd urge anyone and everyone to either check theirs properly or have it check properly, as the rest of the car underneath is in pretty good nick!! So I did not expect that at all!!

So this is where I'm at, it's pretty much ready to weld in, then I can lather on the protection.

Hopefully tomorrow that will be all done and I can turn my attention to the replacement engine and start getting that prepared to go back in, question is, do I power wash the bay out before the engine goes back in? [emoji848][emoji848]aa1c7ac4b262f8231a732a80130a17f8.jpg

Looking loads better , nice work 😎

I always use autoglym machine cleaner ,work in with a brush and rinse off with a spray bottle full of water . Then a spray of muck off bike sealant to keep it clean 😉

Not keen on pressure washing under the bonnet,  as there's quite a few grommets that go into the cabin that might let hi pressure water in

The whole interior would benifit from an good scrubbing out anyway, I'll see what tomorrow bring, bit atm I'm not feeling this off grey look to it [emoji848]
