Help with engine modifications

Hi there I own a 97 subaru impreza wrx. I inherited from my dad who passed. He always wanted to put a bigger turbo on it and get it mapped. So I'm going to do it. Just wondering what is a safe power to go to. I've heard people mention that gearboxes can go on them. It's decated. Got an intercooler, uprated cold air feed and walbro 255 pump. Im getting 550cc injectors and a bigger turbo. I was thinking hybrid my td04 or getting a 20g td05. If anyone else has other turbo ideas I'm happy to hear them. Just dont want to be spending a £1000 just on a turbo lol. Not that rich. Just looking for general advice on safe bph and things I should be checking out for when doing these upgrades. Thank you in advance.

Wow great colour - dont see too many of those. The gearbox is a limiting factor as is the engine - closed deck block or not. I wont quote figures as I am not as familiar with the classics as others on the forum are ( @Tidgy@savage bulldogs ) you can get reinforcing plates for the gearbox though and cross hatching on the block will tell you if it is a CDB or not.

In order to do do the map though check your ECU to see if it is standard, not ESL modified or aftermarket Alcatex etc otherwise you will not be able to map. So I would check that first before turbos, injectors, clutch and the rest.

Savage has a thread going that started in the same way your post has..... Plenty of information in there, food for thought etc including an Arashi turbo unit which could be an alternative to the standard TD options?

Hi n welcome ,If the original engine is in it I'm fairly sure it will be open deck but most standard classic engines will be on their limits at 350hp (regardless of deck type).

I managed to turn a couple of early ty52 5 speed boxes into 4 speed boxes at 330hp 🙄 so as Jay said they'd be your limiting factor .

I'm unsure what turbo the 97 wrx has as standard ,a google would tell you but the car has already been modified , so you'd probably be better off looking for identification Mark's on the compressor housing (silver bit of the turbo) .

The smallest turbo fitted to imprezas is the tdo4 which will make 265 to 290hp .

If it has grey injectors they'll be 380cc ,which max at 290 hp ish .

If it has yellow injectors they'll be 440cc and they max at 350hp ish .

Having a front mount intercooler,  the car should already be mapped (ideally) due to the changes in airflow and fuelling.  Do you know if it's been mapped already and if so how ?

Does it have a boost gauge and if so what does it read ?

Hi there thank you both for the replies. I really appreciate it. I'll take a look at the turbo and injectors when I get a chance. My old man had all that work done years ago but never mapped to my knowledge as he said he wanted to get it all done. At the moment I've got the car on the drive as sorn as it's not my daily. Cant be 100% on the boost gauge reading either in afraid. Sorry I'm not being much help

No probs fella , only reason I asked about the max boost it was running was because if it's over 1 bar .. its probably already been mapped .

Tbh I wouldn't drive it too hard until it's been mapped  , as the modifications might make it run too far outside the oe maps parameters. These engines don't like to run lean , so I'd get it on a dyno for a health check before doing too many miles .

Also if it's been sat a while might be worth doing at least a minor service or oil and filter change too

Are the current injectors grey or yellow ?

Subaru stock yellow 440cc injectors will be ample for your engine and drivetrain limits (330hp ish) .As the yellow 565cc nismo injectors will be a bit overkill and max at 380hp ish .

Saying that there's no harm in fitting bigger injectors, it will just probably cost a bit more to map (no stock subaru map for them) and purchase them (440'cc £60/565'cc £200).

I think the car is a a 97 uk turbo by the way , so it will probably have grey 380'cc injectors and a tdo4 as standard .That both max at 290hp 😉

No need to apologise, bud .

It depends what you want to spend on parts and getting them fitted before spending £500 + on the remap . As the stock v3 UK ecu can't be mapped, so you'd need either a esl daughter board fitted or replacement aftermarket ECU.

It would originally have about 215hp .

With the current tdo4 and grey injectors plus remap you'd see between 260 and 290 hp .

Fitting phase 2 yellow 440cc injectors (with phase adapters) and a tdo5 would probably be the cheapest option, You'd see about 320 to 330hp but that would cost more on top of the remap. (Another £400 ish minimum for parts alone) . Also at that level you'd need to think about a new oe clutch,  unless it's been changed fairly recently?

A new stock blue box exedy clutch would be fine at that hp ,though 👍

Any higher hp than 330hp and ty52 5 speed box ,engine internals and clutch are on borrowed time in a v3 UK 😉

@savage bulldogs hi mate I'm not massively clued up on these Subaru's but I can work on cars. So I'll be fitting all the parts myself. What ecu would you recommend? Also where are the ecu located so I can see if it actually has the standard one still fitted. Also is this a V3 then? I wasnt too sure lol

ECU is under the passenger side foot well under a kick plate held down with 10mm bolts .

The esl daughter board is fitted inside the standard ECU case , so in order to check if it has one . You'd have to completely remove the ECU and undo the cover . You'll be looking for a printed circuit board that will say esl in white on it .

As for best option, the usual choice is esl or apexi f.c as simtek/alkertec aftersales support seems to be a bit hit n miss .

esl has a few more features and runs open source software, apexi is old skool but comes with a hand controller monitor which let's you see live ECU parameters.

What county are you in ?

If you have a fairly local tried n tested mapper, the software he has or prefers to use might help you make a choice

Looking at the few pics you've put up its definitely a v3/v4 uk , engine and ECU wise they're the same . If it has white dials and facelift interior it's a v4 ,if it has preface black dials and interior it's a v3 .
