Hi guys I not sure were to ask this but can anyone tell me what’s this in the picture , my Engine management light came on and I smelt like burning and to cut the story short the thing in the picture was making a racket and I’m sure I smelt like burning, went to a garage and the guy pulled the wires out and it stopped the noise , told me to go to a car sparky

Looks to me like the secondary air pump. If you have a more zoomed out picture it would be easier to confirm.

If it has failed then the engine management light would appear until you either get it replaced or mapped out.

Yes, secondary air pump. Useless thing. Hopefully the valves are closed, if so, just remove the relevant fuses and get the code mapped out. This will explain it:

Yes that's the secondary air pump as I thought it would be. It seems to be a fairly common issue. Replacements can be expensive and even used ones can be pricey. When I had this I got it mapped out. It's a lot cheaper and you don't have to worry about it again after that.

Just now, Mark333 said:

Went into a garage today and was told it could not be mapped out as it’s not a turbo

Hmmm I would question that as it has nothing to do with a turbo system. It is controlled by the ECU which holds the map information - Having a turbo is irrelevant. N/A's can be remapped however in this case it is more about disabling a function not remapping the ECU

Cheers for the info I have to call the mechanic tonight as he said I should call Subaru for the part , when I asked about getting it mapped he called someone who said it can’t be done but I will tell him tonight, I assume it still needs the blocking bits

The blocking bits allow you to remove it and not leave holes. I know they are not near you but for advice maybe phone Sheffield Subaru Services (Martin) or TDR Warwick and get a different view.

TDR is who fixed the issue for me. The blanking plates are good although I have just left the pump in place for now and had it mapped out, so the plates aren't priority. The only reason I can think why they might say it can't be mapped is if the ECU is not tunable maybe? I don't know very much about tuning sorry.

But as Jay said ring a few specialists up and I am sure they will be able to point you in the right direction.

If not there are loads of breakers on eBay so you may be able to pick up a used one cheap?

You should probably read the fault codes to find the current status - there are up to 21 separate fault codes for the system:

As long as the 2 valves are closed, it's not necessary to remove them and fit blanks. The air pump itself can also be left in. You just have to remove the 3 fuses relating to the system, and get into the ECU to disable it and remove the codes. My '06 Forester XT had this done at 50k miles, it's currently on 150k with no problems.

There is an alternative to re mapping the ECU on non-turbo cars - a simulator box from these people in Aus:

Jumped in the car tonight and the management light came on so will try and get the codes as I have a cheap little reader
