New to Scoobys and want to know what to look for

Morning All

well as the title says I'm new to the Scooby scene although I've been an admirer for a long time. I'm looking for a later estate at about £8k, now my questions are:

what do I need to look out for when buying?

service intervals and costs?

what are they like on long distances (not worried on fuel economy but more about the ride)?

nice forum btw, seems to be a lot of information out here to do most things

Hello,

8k should get you a very nice wagon,

Theres a buying guide somewhere on here can't remember where.

As for buying i'd go for, if it's had mods done id be wanting paperwork same with the ' remap' claim

If they have been done well should have no problems and may be better for fuel economy.

Stantard stuff like reg servicing is a must. Servicing used to be short intervals but newer cars go a bit longer 7k i think. Although most of us change the oil every 4-5k.

Look for one thats had a recent belt change or account for that if it's not been done and due,

Don't be put off by main dealer prices as there are lost of very good independants which will do a better and cheaper job.

I take it your lookong at impreza's ?

I'll let someone else answer the ride question on that one.

I stand corrected but cas registered afer may/june 06 may fall into the £450 tax bracket :O

Anyway welcome and feel free to ask as many questions no matter how trivial or daft they may be.

thanks Stanton and matt for the comments. yeah I would be looking at a hawkeye possibly wrx, I do about 25k a year so about 4 services a year then at a guess, what the sort of pricing on servicing, I'm not bad at doing some things myself on the drive as its pretty flat.

main reason I'm looking at something like this is I get a car allowance from work at about £260 per month so would need to pay for servicing, tires and such out of that.

ok so 10k between servicing and about £175 as an average, not bad considering.

I would only want to use 99 products like vmax and excellium, great thing to have the company pay for all the fuel its not something I need to worry about too much lol :)

Something like this

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201312060368124/sort/atcustom/postcode/ls27qz/radius/1501/make/SUBARU/model/impreza/price-from/7500/price-to/9000/page/1/usedcars?desc=1

Bit on the pricy side but it's a jtc garage.

I'm sure theres many more around looks like your gonna have a nice time in the classified ads.

(Goes to search out more cars he can't afford)

Thats the fun part but sometimes the hardest but you have a pretty good budget. I still ended up in Manchester for one though. But you are pretty central I'm on the east coast so you might not have the same difficulties I had finding a Subaru :)

thats the one i've seen in the adds so far, so i think i'll take a loo at it next week get a feel for them and really get a good understanding of the car. they do seem to have quite a few impreza's so i guess they know their stuff.

good thing about my job i go out and about a fair bit so if a car is close to where i'm working i'll ake a quick diversion to take a look.

What about something like this... Clickerty Click

Nice but ooooh that will be so hard on the ride. Don't mind a harder ride but I do like to finish a journey in one piece lol! Do need to think with the mileage that I'll be doing I need something under 60k at the start so I can run it for a few years.

If getting one around them miles check when the clutch and timing belt pulleys and water pump was done, it's about when the 1st big service is due. But most will get them done before so worth keeping that in mind :)

Could use it to try get money off and have it done after though ;)

you can't get newage wagon sti's, only the wrx. it was only the classics that could be wagon sti.

JCT cars is a small dealer, Jason Turner, (nothing to do with JCT500) I bought my last one from him, nice chap. plenty of feedback about him on scabbynet, he's not cheap, but normally very good quality cars.

the ride in the wrx is fine, mine is lowered and we have been down to brighton a couple of times and last year we went to Newquay, the only reason we stopped half way was for the kids to use a toilet and have a bite to eat

ah well i didn't know that they never made the sti in the newage waggon, thanks.

going to have a pop round my local subaru dealer today at lunch i think, see what they have about and maybe try an wrx (saloon as i dont think they have any waggons), will be useful to feel what they should be like and understand what i might be getting myself into lol.

i am planning on doing a bit to the car, remap, intake, exhaust change but i dont want to go full out racing/rallying spec, any thoughts on basic upgrades/changes that i could look at doing just to give it a bit more oomph (don't do just standard, i like cars so why shouldn't mine go a bit quicker than someone that doesn't lmao).

Thanks In Advance

Matt

will be interested in your reaction - I feel a big grin coming on

wrt tweaks there are many options - start with pipe, filter and remap then brakes, bigger injectors, uprated fuel pump another map, front mount intercooler, bigger turbo another map also any chassis stiffening to suite along the way

its a slippery slope but a great slide :)

I'm sure there will be a huge grin, i was lucky enough to drive a P1 many years ago when they were launched and loved every minute of it, pity i couldn't afford one at the time lol.

costs wise for filter, map and pipes what would i be looking?

In total prob looking at around 1k+ if buying new pipes.

Could do it for half that with 2nd hand pipes.

Mapping will be around £500 if its not been mapped before as youll need to pay for the Ecutek Licence. About £300 if already been mapped.

Pannel filters are from £30 upwards depending on Brands. Ie Piper Cross, K&N. HKS ect.

Open source mapping by Racedynamix or similar will be about £350.

if you want 330ish bhp, get a turbo, injectors, fuel pump and exhaust. You should be able to get those bits including fitting and mapping for about a grand.

NO, I didn't want an STI, and YES, I could afford one if I did want one!!!!
