  1. Hi, I've got an ongoing issue with my 93 WRX import with flatspots/hesitation in the power delivery. I've changed the MAF from a working car and tried a working knock sensor of another car but after an ECU reset I am still getting code 22 through the check engine light and still have the hesitation. I have took a reading of 5 volts from the connector the knock sensor plugs into on mine but on a working Impreza (94 wagon import) and that only shows 3 volts on the same connector. Is my higher voltage causing the circuit to indicate an error and the ECU to change the fueling - hence the loss of power and flatspots etc? What is the voltage the Knock sensor circuit should be running at? Could a short in the wiring cause the high voltage? Or am I looking in the wrong place and the engine is just knackered?

  3. Hi, my 93 WRX import has been running a rough idle and hesitation for a while now without any engine light coming on. Last week the engine light finally triggered and using the connectors under the dash I managed to get code 22 out of it which I believe is the knock sensor. I took the old sensor out and it has 2 or 3 cracks through the plastic so I can safely assume its pretty terminal. Over the weekend I picked up a 2nd hand knock sensor from a Subaru breakers as I wanted to try and get the job done yesterday. Fitted it but it appears to make no difference, still got rough idle and engine light on the dash. I tried hooking up the diagnostic connectors under the dash again in an attempt to reset the ECU but this was still flashing up as code 22. I have checked the voltage on the wire that the knock sensor plugs into and I'm getting 5 volts. When the knock sensor is plugged in I only get about 3 volts from the metal off the bottom of it. So my question well questions are is that a normal reading? Should the voltage drop like that or is the sensor I picked up no good? Have I missed something with the ECU reset? Do I need to unhook the battery for 24 hours or is there an easier and quicker way to do it? I am nowhere near an electrician but trying to learn the tricks as I go along so any help, hints, tips, kick in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
  4. Ah ok I see. Well the fact that your other windows worked still is different to me and sort of scuppers my idea that if one went they all went as it would not be a complete circuit. I might try another control box but I think that is ok as it seems to send out signals when I had the voltmeter against it. I think it is a wiring or earth issue somewhere but don't really know where to look. Does anyone know of a way to manually get a window back up?
  5. Hi Dan, that is the definition of an odd problem. Glad you got it sorted. By control box do you mean the 4 switches and lock button on the drivers door or is there a box somewhere in the dash? When you had the issue did any of the other windows work from their switches or did they all stop working?
  6. Hi, I have got a 93 JDM WRX and I'm having what I assume is an electrical issue with my windows(I'm no electrician but looking to learn as much as I can). The drivers side window has never worked, I tested the circuit and it seems to be getting a current when the switch is pressed at the green connector that goes into the wire through to the back of the motor so I assume the motor is shot but the other 3 all worked from the drivers panel and the individual switches. I have started stripping the car as I'm looking to use it for rallying eventually and when I took the rear door cards off I took the switches off with them which stopped the rear windows from working(I assume because the circuit was not complete) but the passenger window still worked from the drivers panel and the passenger switch. Over the weekend I re-attached the switches to the rear window circuits and they started working again from the individual switches and the drivers panel. Ok so all was good at this point, 3 out of the 4 were working which I could live for now. I then removed all the carpets and roof lining and took the speaker out of the drivers door. On re-attaching the door card none of my windows now work from any switch. I have tested the panel and it is getting power and with the back off when a switch is pressed the volt meter shows a spike so it looks like it is doing something. When I re-tested the green connector on the wire that goes into the motor on the drivers door it now no longer registers any activity on the tester. So does anyone have any idea what could be the issue? I've looked online and I can't see anything about a fuse for the windows but is there one? Could this be an earthing issue and if so how do I go about testing and diagnosing it? Any help would be greatly appreciated as the passenger window is currently stuck down. Is there a way to force the window back up? Can I put a charge through the motor to put the window up? Again thanks in advance.
  7. The picture quality is great thanks, just trying to work out where to look on mine as from memory not much looks the same. I'll print out the picture and have a hunt when I'm underneath the car but definitely don't remember seeing a spring like that. If I was to get a picture of my slave cylinder and upload would you be able to tell me if I'm missing something?
  8. I didn't take any springs off when bleeding from the slave but to be honest I haven't noticed any springs. Where do I need to be looking?
  9. Hi Guys, Started doing some work on the new car I picked up and I've ran into an issue whilst bleeding the clutch. The car is 93 JDM WRX and when I had it the clutch bite was almost on the floor and I was getting the odd crunch on gear change so thought I'd start by changing the fluid to see if it helped. My master cylinder doesn't have a bleed nipple(or doesn't appear to have one) so I've bled the system from the slave cylinder. I've bled the system by having a bleeding kit connected to the nipple, loosening the bolt a bit and having someone press the clutch down, then tighten the bolt and have them pull the clutch up. Repeated this process and topped up fluid in master until the fluid coming through the pipe was nice and clean and as far as I can tell there is no air bubbles. Now for the problem. The clutch peddle does not return all the way to the top like it used to. Instead it pops back up about a third of the way maybe a little less and then you can bring the peddle up all the way manually but doing this there is a very much mechanical clunk. When then putting the clutch peddal down, it drops instantly with another mechanical clunk to the third of the way down point and then it feels like a "normal" clutch again with hydraulic feel. I think the clutch is working in the bottom part as with the clutch fully down I can change between gears smoothly (with engine off due to alarm(another issue but one at a time)) but I need to get the 2/3rds part of the clutch with no feel sorted. Is this down to a faulty master cylinder or does the pedal need adjusting where it connects to the cylinder linkage? Is it more simple then that and I have indeed got air in the system? Apologies if this a simple issue or repeated question - I'm a noob I will admit it but I'm trying to learn by getting my hands dirty. Thanks in advance.
  10. Thanks for the reply, very interesting that the fluid leak was causing the bite to move about. Did you have any issues with getting into gear while it was leaking? I tried to give the car another test last night so I let it warm up for a while on the drive but then discovered I now can't select any gear, seems like the clutch was just not working at all. Had a quick scan underneath and I think there is something leaking but until I get it jacked up and give it a proper inspection I won't be able to confirm. I'm hoping the issue is to do with the clutch fluid leaking as new piping or new master or slave cylinder is a hell of a lot less work then a clutch change. I haven't checked the gearbox oil level yet but as you've mentioned I will check it when doing the clutch fluid. If I wanted to change the gearbox oil how many litres would I need?
  11. Thanks for the fueling advice, didn't realise Tesco's Momentum was so highly rated, I've decided to go with V-Power for now as there is a Shell at the end of the road but will monitor how it goes As an update the car I thought I had an agreed sale on was sold the day before I was due to go and collect. I have however managed to get my hands on a 93 WRX import with a V2 JDM WRX engine in it. The joys of this means I've been able to get it on classic car insurance and got a quote for an honestly silly low price of £132 for the year - limited to 5000 miles as it's a second car. I haven't paid that much for the motor either as it has a few niggles but the guy seemed honest enough and seemed to know everything about Subaru's and seems honest enough to help out with the work needed. He has a number of Subaru's and is currently having a 400bhp forged engine stuck in his main Impreza so his got experience of working on them. One thing I may need some advice with though is the clutch/gearbox. The guy says it had an uprated clutch put in start of the year(can't remember the exact clutch as I'm at work and can't see the paperwork). Now the issue I have found is that the gearbox will crunch slightly when changing gear sometimes. Seems to really only happen when changing up into 3rd and 4th and happens more when the car is warmed up. If you double clutch, or change slowly - so clutch down, into neutral for a second then into gear it changes fine with no issues. The clutch is not slipping and there is no horrible clutch smell but the biting point is very low, pretty much foot hard down to the floor and then slight movement the clutch is already starting to bite. Could it be that the clutch bite is so low that when changing gear the clutch is not engaging and disengaging properly? I am looking at flushing the clutch fluid this weekend but is that something that would help and maybe bring the biting point up a little or is this something more technical? Could I be looking at a dodgy clutch or worse a dodgy box?
  12. Ahh sounds like a fun job then. I've seen a place in Stafford called secureacar that will fit a toad sterling cat 1 system for 180 which I don't think is too bad, is that a fair price you think? As for the fuel I'm fairly certain it has been but will double check. I'll be running it on v-power as to hopefully get the best out of it. It's a fully closed block as well which I hope means it will be a solid unit and up to the job.
  13. Hi chaps, sorry for the lack of updates. I have found an 96 WRX import that I am very close to buying (hopefully with some help and advice from here I will be buying). It seems a good find and looked after but it has no alarm or immobiliser fitted and a couple of the quotes I've had are based on it having security. I've Googled and it seems to be letting me down so far so if someone could help it would be very much appreciated. How much would I be looking on average you think to get a category 1 alarm system and how much for fitting? Is it a job I can do myself or is it a minefield just not worth entering. As always thanks for helping.
  14. These things happen and I'm still very much in the market, just trying to find the right one :D Sorry to hear about yours, hopefully it's nothing major. I've been past them a few times, are they any good? Very local and handy if they are up to scratch.
  15. Well the project has fallen through due to the person who was supposed to be helping me with the engine swap saying he wouldn't be able to any more. As much as I wanted to attempt it there is just no way I would be able to get it done by myself. This leaves me on the lookout again and I think I know what I want, I like the look of a 94/5/6 JDM WRX. Been doing some reading up and them seem like a decent amount of motor. Seen a couple so just a case of seeing what prices I can do a deal for. Weston if your offer of showing off your car still stands then I'd happily take you up on it.
  16. Afternoon mate, cheers for the welcome. Just to update you guys(if you were interested) I may have found myself a little project. I've come across a stripped out 98 WRX that needs a new engine. Seems like it's had some work put into it and once ticking over again should be some machine. I'm currently waiting on a mate for hopefully some info about an engine he thinks he can source but I was wondering if you guys have any advice? Any good places for engines? bad places? Is it a job I can take on with some mates or am I bonkers?
  17. Nice one really appreciate that, have a good break. Sounds like you have got yourself a proper cracking motor there mate. Hopefully I'll be able to join in the fun soon - can definitely feel the itch for one getting stronger. Hi Steve, I never really thought about the weight difference before. A blob is my all time ideal Impreza and the things I would do for a WR1 are not speakable. I'll keep an eye out for the things you've mentioned. I really do feel much more in the know and not a complete novice anymore thanks.
  18. Hi Weston that's awesome information thanks. I can't agree more about the working hard and having things to enjoy. I'm in the same sort of boat, I did have a 3 litre saloon 3 series and it was amazing but dogs and a child do not get on without a proper boot. I've changed my car to the estate and it's still a good car and means I can still have a little giggle every now and again on the way to work but I do miss having something with "real" power. Your's sounds pretty special to be fair. As your local could I be cheeky (if you're about) arrange to come and have a gander and a quick chat so I can have a look round a tidy example? I'm still really torn between what I would like, I've seen a stripped out and caged turbo on the bay that I reckon would be a lot of fun but at the same time it's taking the risk of having a car that's been used and abused already.
  19. I've seen a Turbo at a dealership in Birmingham so I'm thinking of going to look at that on Saturday, get a feel for what I should be looking for and hopefully how they should drive as last thing I want to do is commit to a long trip down south only to have no real clue when I get there. The information on here is invaluable thank you guys and I think I've got a better idea of what I'd like now. Only problem is it might involve bending the misses' arm a bit more with the wedding budget :D
  20. Hi guys, really appreciate the feedback. As I'm just starting out and looking to expand my knowledge as I go along - modifications will be simple early on but that's not to say I won't catch the bug and want to push things further. To be honest I have always had a soft spot for the estate (again thanks to Gran Turismo) but with my daily being an estate I think I'd like to have a saloon. Very interesting that you guys think getting a turbo would be enough to start with though, definitely helps with the budget. To be cheeky what would you think of the below example: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201408146597390/usedcars?logcode=visc Now to me that seems too cheap and I know the age old if it's too good to be true but do you think it could be worth a punt? Would any of you know what the Prodrive special edition is in reference too? I've tried to do some research but can't seem to find much about it. As for insurance, I have tried a comparison site previously and the cheapest I could get was around the 550 mark. I realise this isn't a massive price but to be honest I thought stating the very few miles I plan to do in the car (less than 2000 a year) and it wouldn't be my main car I would be able to get even cheaper then that. Is this a sensible thought path or am I just dreaming a little? Again thanks for the input, I'm trying to contain my excitement and keep a level head so that I can hopefully make the right choice and find a cracking motor.
  21. Good Morning Chaps and Chapettes, I’d like to take the opportunity to introduce myself. I’m Shaun, from Wolverhampton and looking to take my first dive into Impreza ownership but would very much appreciate if I could ask a few questions (apologies if I am repeating what you may have heard before). I have come across quite a few buying guides (they’re great and give a really good insight into what to look for) and I’d like to think I have a decent amount of general knowledge thanks to a childhood spent hooked on Gran Turismo and WRC. That said I have a very basic mechanical knowledge and hopefully this will allow to have a tinker and learn more. Basically I’m looking to purchase a second car, currently have an E91 320d Estate for family duties and the commute, don’t get me wrong it’s a lovely motor and rear wheel drive is fun but after previously owning a Clio 172 and an FN2 Type-R – I’m missing the joys of petrol. I have about 2000 to 2500 to spend but this is where I need some advice. Ideally I would like to start doing some Road Rallies, Hill Climbs, Sprints etc. Now I realise that my budget will not allow me to get into those activities straight away but I’d like to buy a car that I can work on and get towards that point. I have seen quite a few classic turbo’s for the 1000 to 1500 mark which would be well in budget and allow me some to change bits if necessary but in your opinion what are the Turbo models like? Obviously interior is not a concern as I will most likely be taking most of it out but how do they drive? I have seen 6 Second 0-60’s quoted but is this accurate? How good are they for handling, suspension, brakes etc? In my head I have always wanted an STI but unfortunately I cannot see the budget stretching that far, is it worth waiting another year or two and getting an STI or can a Turbo provide a similar experience? I have also seen a few WRX’s in the classic shape – a little more pricey but still affordable, how do these compare to a turbo? There also appears to be the odd bug eye WRX knocking about towards the 2500 end of my budget. Again how do these compare? Would I be better off getting the newer shape or would I be running into a lot of problems buying a cheap bug eye. Another thing I need to consider is insurance, I’m 26 next month and have 8 years no claims. What sort of price would you expect me to be paying for what say 1000 maybe 2000 mile premium? I realise this is a mammoth post and if you have made it this far then thank you for sticking with me. As I said I am new to the scene and would love to get involved but just trying to make sure I can make the man maths work. Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Shaun
