My turbo whistles quite a lot so that's my substitute for a dump valve.

The reason some say no is basically with the standard recirc as you change gear or let off the throttle any air left post turbo is accounted for and the ecu will push the fuel in ready. When you change to a dump valve you are essentially removing that air. The effect is basically running rich for a small amount of time until the air is built back up.

There are bargains out there. We just bought a 1.8 non turbo impreza for £300. Clutch is high but works fine. We are gonna replace it at a cost of £130. It's not the best of lookers but mechanically it's sound.

I always carry a tow rope and a few favours in my pocket. Recovery firms have you by the short and curlys at that point and it's out of order the price they charge.
