Don't remap until you find a cause of the check engine. Remapping can make the problem a lot worse. What codes did the garage pull from the ecu?

As a daily i would say wrx is better, I got 03 impreza blob wrx sti and I can tell you steering is stiff, 6 gears to deal with and heavy clutch, not fun in start stop town traffic.

As long as the new pulley is the same diameter that is not an issue. Do you have dashcam if you do and it's hardwired is parking mode on? I would start with a voltmeter. Anything over 13v with load on should mean alternator is possibly ok. In which case you could be looking at parasitic draws. Normal alternator is normally around 13.5v-15v Smart alternators is normally around 12v-15v

You can try contacting subaru dealer they should have a code on file. Assuming previous owners didn't change it. I assume you don't have spare fob.

Nick did you check for rust under the side skirts, I spend a small fortune on my 03 type uk prodrive removing it.

I've noticed they quoted for MLSG, that's good, they last a lot longer to crappy old paper type ones. I assume engine overheated hence HG failure. For STI engine I would say definitely. For WRX yes if you have the money, if you are skint and engine wasn't overheated too badly you might get away with just the gasket, BUT it's a risk. I personally would not risk it. I just had HG failure on my 03 STI, it cost me for complete engine overhaul £5k + labour.

Pops and bangs is normally the anti lag, it dumps excess fuel into manifold exploding with heat and keeping turbo spooled while engine is getting new stuff in. Side effect of pops and bangs anti-lag is reduced life of the turbo due to heat.

I used to play a bit of cs and dayz myself, but I'm mainly into rts games like ra2:yr, city skylines, etc also rage 2 and simular. That's on PC side, on ps4 racing, and shooting.

crikey that is terrible, evereyone should know you bleed air out of cooling system from the highest point, after all air goes up. in subarus that is the tank above the turbo on top of the engine, obviously.
