Broke my gearbox :(

Hey dudes, I broke my gearbox yday, car still goes in everygear but more difficulty and well there is a "tuktutuk" noise when in neutral.

Now i want a ppg gearset with a 4.44 final drive ratio.

Is this something I could pull off myself or do you need way too many specialist tools to rebuild the gearbox?.

Literally only revved it to 5k, held the clutch, felt the bite and then slowly lifted, didn't even dump the clutch, it just decided to pop out of gear (assuming I lost some teeth at that time).

I'm thinking of taking the engine out while I'm at it and building it to take 400whp atleast.

I want a rocket.

That being said there is a ra built to redline at 9k, with ppg and syvecs already pushing 400whp for around 10k.

Right now I just need to take the loss, shut up and save up 😂😂

Doh [emoji57]

Bin there done that then fitted a 6 speed , which is a lot cheaper than ppg gears sets [emoji6]

Have a look on the likes of lateral performance website for prices of ppg gears sets..... but make sure your sitting down first [emoji33] .

I spent a year scouring the net and forum's to get the bit's to forge my engine at the right price (£1.8k including machining ) . You'll be lucky to get change from £2.5 k for parts and machining costs . That's without labour ,injectors, turbo , clutch ,gearbox ,brakes ect ...

Not trying to scare you off and I'll help wherever I can but just to warn you that it's not cheap , so get saving [emoji6]

If it's not broke .....upgrade it 😊

I'm not selling this car its such a massive achievement for me. My First car and a car which I built/doneup myself.

Savs I wanna stay 5 speed cause of the ratios and ofc I wanna be able to launch @ 7krpm I am still youth 😅. I'm saving probs till I find someone selling a ppg gearset or I'll fork out sell my kidney or something and get a new one haha 😂

Jdm 6 speeds do have a shorter ratio than the 3.5.4 ratio uk 6 speeds [emoji6]

Dunno if you'd get away with 7k launches but Duncan from racedynmics used to run just under 700 hp through his 6 speed.

You would need a strong triple plate clutch which wouldn't be nice to drive around town .

5 speed ppg boxes do come up second hand for about £2.5k (slightly cheaper than buying the gear sets and box rebuild stuff ).

I'd have to chuck another box in for the time being , as after about 8 days of no boost n burble I start to go into withdrawal and shake [emoji23]

Best of luck bud .

How can I tell what rear diff I have? Would it be r160 or r180.

The previous owner was pretty sure it was a ra gearbox but the code didn't match :/

It might be a wrx sti gearbox (8x-ty52vn6aa) ?

If I want something temporary (which I could afford in a month 😅) it has to be ratios so close that I can go to 40mph in gear one.

Which basically allows me to use a bigger turbo which can choo choose all the way to 7k (dont need to change gear as much hence wont lose boost).

I read good things about a JDM gearbox and 4.44 final drive

@savage bulldogs

okay ive found a jdm bugeye gearbox with a 4.44 diff.

im assuming i will need a r180 diff and matching driveshafts? aswell as a new propshaft? im assuming ill also need new wheel hubs!

i want a 4.44 final drive ratio so im assuming i need a rear 4.44 r180 diff to get that final ratio?

does that sound right to you ?

TY754VBBAA (the gearbox code that im gonna buy)

As long as the 5 speed your buying is definitely the same ratio as the original rear diff, you won't need to disturb your existing rear diff ,shafts and hubs . The classic front shafts will fit the later 5&6 speed boxes up to at least early 04 .

You need to use a stub axle conversion kit to use classic shafts on the 6 speeds after that (like I'm running) but that's not necessarily the case with 04 onwards 5 speeds .

Gearbox cradle ,linkage and prop are the only basic bits you need to fit a 6 speed into a classic (if the ratios are the same ) . So worst case scenario you'd need the above .

Unless anyone else has fitted a bug onwards 5 speed into a classic ?

Otherwise You'll have to cross check part numbers/dimensions between classic and bug for .... prop, gearbox cradles/mounts and linkage parts ect to see if they're the same .

In theory it should just fit ,the clutch, fly ,starter ,front shafts are definitely all compatible but I know the newage 5 speed has a bigger casing (hence the posible need for the cradle/mounts) cos have never fitted a bug 5 speed box into a classic myself.

Perfect thanks for the information! I'll get some research done tomorrow morning if the part numbers are matching!

During my gearbox hunt I found out my gearbox code can be substituted for an early bug gearbox so it's possible some bug versions fit. TY754VN1AA and TY754VN2AA are "Apparently" interchangable. VN1AA are found on late UK classics and VN2AA on early UK bugs.

Just some information.

When the car is off all gears can be selected!

With the car in neutral there is a "tuktuktuk" noise which goes away when I press the clutch.

I can then select a gear and proceede to bite the car, which bites like its got a massive rock under the wheels and once I give enough beans it judders and starts driving normally in gear with feint "tuktuk" noise now when I stop that's when everything goes !Removed!.

Once in neutral I can't put it in any gears I have to try like 20 times then once I get 1 gear the rest all go in easily.

Does sound like a bit of cog has chipped off and is getting stuck between the other gears causing a "rocking" sensation as you try to pull away . So yeah it sounds like a fubar'd box to me . You could try dropping the box sump plug out and check for debris in the oil[emoji6]

Afaik in the worst case scenario you'd need the same as fitting a bug 6 speed . I did this I'n mine with the 6 speed box, linkage cradle and prop (when my brv owned it ) everything else classic is compatible .

I've never fitted a later 5 speed into a classic myself so can't say for sure if its a straight swap for the ty52's .

I know The ty54 gearbox casings are bigger so you need to check the .... cradle ,linkage ,mounts and prop are definitely the same size as the early classic ty52 boxes [emoji6]
