Am I making a mistake?

I've been looking at buying one of my childhood dream cars, Subaru impreza blobeye.

I want a standard wrx that hasn't been abused or modified.  There really doesn't seem to be many around

I was gonna set a budget of 5k but there's one locally at a dealer who sells only imprezas.  He has done a deal with me for 6100 quid.

http://www.jctcars.co.uk/used-cars/subaru-impreza-2-0-wrx-4dr-rotherham-201611219958721

One owner, 05 plate, ppp, loads of service history, good condition (to my eyes, tho it had just been polished).

It's due the cam belt so he said they will change that as part of sale.

Am i getting ripped off?  I'm taking out a loan to buy this and selling my car private.

Anyone have experience with the dealer in question?

JCT had some good feedback - scoobies have been going up in price over last two years or so - the roaring business in breaking them is having quite the impact.

The photos were taken with the car in the rain so you cannot see the condition of the bodywork but it does look clean enough elsewhere. Is he doing the pulleys as well as the belt? consider investing in a water pump to get replaced at same time as belt as useful to do whilst the belt is off

I've seen it in person and bodywork is good.  One small little tiny dent on the front wing right on the crease, no change of repair.

Jct say they have been selling impreza for 17 years now.

The price is defo top end money, I'm having a proper test drive tomorrow, i will clarify about the pulleys.

How much we talking for a water pump?

Like i said it's top top money they want on account for it been a 1 owner car in fairly good physical nick.

I have bought 2 subarus from Jason at jct,he is a nice guy and he wont rip you off, second car I bought he told me something wrong with drivers seat wouldn't slide but would fix it before I bought,he could sort the seat as runners was bent so he got another seat at his cost and put it in for me.will give you good after service as well if you need anything,he even put some nice after market wheels on that I had seen in his work shop that I said I like'd more then the original wrx wheel and did not charge me any extra.if he says he will change cam belt as part the sale he will.

That's brilliant to know.

What scares me is paying top money, but if you look at part ex prices right now that car would fetch just over 3.5k, that's a big margin and loss.

They probably paid nearer 5 for it tho.

I've met two blokes who work there, don't know which one is Jason, probably the tall one.  His mate took me for a spin the other day, thought he was going to kill me.  Showed me what the car can do tho.

Probably doesn't help that i wrote a car off on that same road in my first few years of driving. Lol bad for black ice.

If test drive goes well and i can come to a deal with regards to replacing belt pulleys and pump... Then i should probably get the car.

Fuel costs scare me lol.  I got about 28mpg in my petrol a3, i do less miles these days tho.

Those figures seem pretty high.

I do quite a lot of short journeys these days, rarely over ten miles in one go.  Real urban driving.  Nipping to work, shops etc....

It's my luck i will end up getting 15mpg

Guessing if u boot it your looking at what... 10mpg lol.

in the hatch driving steady from wombwell to chapletown on back roads computer on dash reads 24mpg,when I start at 6am and its quiet and I go bit quickers on back roads round 20mpg,if am late and go for it it goes to 16-17 mpg  rusin on motorway don't do it much but it goes in the mid 30's so not that bad really when I had a focus st 225bhp and just driving steady that only did 21mpg best

Can only reiterate my quote above, JCT are building a decent reputation. Member on here picked his up yesterday, straight over to a specialist for a once over and it was given a clean bill of health inc dyno run.

You got a link to the thread for this member?

Would be curious to see which one he bought.  I was there last week and he sold a few.  Apparently sold 2 today.

Sounds like a good car and good dealer. A bit over priced.

I would be losing 2k in value instantly should i need to trade it in.  I doubt i would get much more than 4 private.

They seem to be basing the high price on the condition, 1 owner and ppp

Yes. I bought my Blob Eye from a dealer in Wales 2 years ago. 69k miles on the clock for £5k. Not one owner though and not PPP.

Bought my car from there last year. Had a few issues (crack in windscreen that I didn't spot, but still passed mot!) and shot rear shocks. Jason replaced the shocks and brake pads and rear discs for me at same time. I replaced windscreen although he offered once realised I wasn't taking the ****. He also did cambelt as part of sale. Car is mechanically sound.

Seems to fit with others feedback.

Well I'm going to go with missus today and have a test drive.  If it feels right and i can stomach the running costs, i will put deposit down.

Going to think I'm a right time waster if not, will be my third visit!

End of day i work hard for my money tho, if I'm concerned it's the wrong decision then i won't go for it.

Been and had another look.  Car seems to drive fairly well and i think the girlfriend has been converted.

Obviously this car is priced for top money, reflective of the condition and 1 owner, but there was a few things making me hesitant to put deposit down without taking time to think about it.

I noticed the steering wheel was way out of line, probably just needs a 4 wheel alignment, but who knows if there's another reason for it.

Secondly the biting point on the clutch was very very high, it's done 90k on original clutch i believe, so it's gonna need a clutch.

He's gonna do the cam belt water pump and pulleys etc...

Is it worth the top money they are asking? I'm not sure.

What i will say is they are very nice people, very knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating.  If they have a car your interested in i would say defo go give them a chance.

A car like that if you do want rid very quickly after buying it just sell privately - trade in value is not worth considering as at the moment good condition scoobs are retaining their value and in some cases (Type R's, Widetrack STI's etc) are increasing

I had that very same feeling when l came from an A4 tfsi...

Obviously you would do some tests to see if the clutch is slipping, but from what ive read and been told, the clutches are just high...  The pedal is adjustable tho...

It seems a little over priced, but 1 owner and PPP...

I say go for it mate, you will love it, especialy when you start to change stuff lol

Yeah i mentioned clutch to dealer this morning he said clutch is spot on, it very well might be.

Then he said he is gonna take the car off sale and put it in storage as it will.be worth more than double what it is now in 5 to ten years time, says he won't find another 1 owner with ppp.

If he has a change of heart i might buy it.

Sounds like he might be playing with you to force your hand. Tried something similar with me initially when I reported my probs. Offered me money back and said he'd list it for sale for more money as he'd had so many enquiries. I stood firm and he realised I was being genuine and sorted things for me in the end

Yeah i had same thoughts as you.

In general i really hate dealing with car dealers.  We all know they bought this car from a private seller probably for under 5k, given it a Hoover and a polish and suddenly to me it's 6300 pounds worth.  Fair enough he says he will put a cam belt kit on it, fingers crossed it's a genuine one with a genuine water pump etc... Otherwise he may well not bother.

The clutch might be fine but I'm fully expecting within 12 months of ownerahip to need to spend a grand on it, full service and a clutch kit.  Should come to about 800 quid.

The big sting for me is the money I'm set to lose on the Audi.  Just over 2 grand, not end of world tho.

The Scooby would be a much better investment if i ever decided to part with it.
