How reliable is the 2011 IMPREZA 2.5 WRX STI? Warranty worth it?

Recommended Posts

Hello getting this car in a few days, it'll be coming up 8 years old next year. i'd like to know of any reliability issues I could face or specific problems this car has, if any, and I guess just with sti's in general? I've been offered a 1 year RAC warranty from the dealer for £299. Would it be a good investment? If something went wrong i don't think i could afford a big repair bill so i'm considering it. The dealer has a good reputation and the car has a full service history. If i don't need the warranty i'll likely spend the money on a remap instead.

Need to check exactly what is covered and replaced with what. 2.5 has known ringland and headgasket issues, doe the warranty cover that? if so what does it cover, like for like or a specialist rebuild.

Dependant on mileage, potholes you could be looking at bushes (not a huge issue) suspension struts and or front suspension bearings (top hats).

Have a look under the sound proofing blanket on the bonnet (if there), mine held the condensation and being wet all the bolts holding the scoop on had rusted - dont want this starting on your bonnet.

On the whole though mine was reliable, just replaced tyres and brake pads 😉

I picked up my 2011 last may. not had any reliability issues. just wear and tear items.

I did have mine remapped at the start of February, to find out it had the type uk330 remap on it from the factory( this wasn't obvious without a dyno) So the horrible factory lean map wasn't on the car from day zero.

Does the car advert have any performance pack such as the 320r 340r or other such packages? As having one of these could further improved reliability. As the ringland issue is down to the cyclinders running too hot due to the poor map/lack of fuel. so mines running 11.1 AFR on boost. but was healthy with the off the shelf factory performance packs. just needed timing and specializing to the car.

Do you have an advert we can look at?

Thanks for the info. Just picked it up today, the adverts gone off the site now 😅. I didn't see any packages tbh. Just stock settings i believe, whatever they are. Car's great but jesus christ the fuel economy is garbage. I knew that going into it but it really feels like its eating fuel even when cruising. Do you find that a good map can give a significant increase to mpg?

Try running sport mode this should give you a couple more mpg - there is a thread on  here somewhere (think it was Salsa or magik thighs??) the standard map has 0.5 bar sport runs 1bar and sport # has 1.5 bar boost - he found running in sport gave higher mpg - I found the same but had to remind myself to select sport mode all the time. The bespoke map I was going for would have had the standard map with increased boost to run similar to the sport mode saving me messing about.

My RX only indicates 28mpg urban driving so not great - can get 35 - 40 on a run though which was also achievable in my STI
