Hi Marcothio, I would say that the filter helped slightly, however I'm not sure if that was because the K&N is any better, or just due to the fact that it is fresh and clean compared to the original one. I've never used K&N before, so dont have any loyalty or preference for them, It was about £20 more than an OEM Subaru filter, so not cheap. Its hard to say if its any better as I obviously had a less than perfect running car regardless of Air filter, and had not much driving time before swapping out the old one.
  2. So I would advise everyone to be vigilant on checking their oil especially after a service. My average is now 46 up from low 40s, and seems to be climbing every day, and my work journey is now mid 50s where the highest I had achieved before was 51 on a determined mpg run. I can't believe the difference it has made, and has transformed the car. I am now interested to see what difference new oil and filter will make, if any.

So drained out the oil via the dipstick pipe and a length of skinny tube, measured the tube off the dipstick, to make sure I inserted it down to just below the top fill mark, took an age to drain out, but got there in the end. Looks like maybe around a litre came out. Drove to work and got 49mpg, which is an improvement but I'll see what the journey home is like.

Parked the car, gave it 5 minutes and checked the oil, Don't know how clear that will be in the picture, but to me it looked like the oil was above the twist, so probably about 5cm over the top hole. Think I'll drain some out if I can then order some new oil for an "intermediate" service. The oil is pretty black, but I am giving them the benefit of the doubt and saying that is because it's a diesel.

  6. So after fitting a K&N air filter my MPG has improved slightly, however still seems to be sporadic. Last night I checked the oil, maybe 3/ 3.5 hours after parking up, I noticed that it was a fair way over the top fill mark. maybe an Inch or so. Potentially this could be causing undue pressure and reducing mpg? I'm thinking that I will try to remove some oil this evening. Although the oil looked very black so I may do an oil change at the weekend, as my trust in the 3 year service is some what lacking at the moment. "The Saga continues"
  7. Spent an age clicking through the menu the other day and could not find a way of changing the settings, even from MPG to km/l. I even looked at the handbook! but found nothing :( Someone on the US crosstek owners club has asked the question but there doesnt seem to be a response from "over the Pond" either.
  8. Hi all, I'm considering replacing the suspension bushes on my 2004 2.0XT (model SG5BK5D if that helps?) as there are a few clunks and squeeks that are starting to annoy me. I've seen this kit - http://www.strongflexuk.co.uk/subaru/forester/sg-02-08/full-suspension-bush-kit.html#.V5XKz6J1l-5 having taken some parts off in the past, I think it would be wise to replace all nuts and bolts as they come off, having looked through the suspension pages here: http://opposedforces.com/parts/forester/en_s11/type_19/suspension_and_axle/rear_suspension/illustration_1/ and http://opposedforces.com/parts/forester/en_s11/type_19/suspension_and_axle/front_suspension/illustration_1/ I think i will need the following parts along with the bush kit: Front Suspension: 2 x 9 - 20207AA000 - Nut, Self locking 2 x 12 - 202165A000 - Bushing (hopefully included in bushing kit) 2 x 8 - 20126SA010 - Stopper-Transverse link rear bushing 2 x 14 - 20126SA000 - Stopper - Transverse rear bushing - Front 2 x 2 - 901000264 - Flange Bolt 2 x 5 - 902350006 - Self locking nut Rear Suspension: 2 x 25 - 20540AA080 - Bolt B-Transverse Link 4 x 12 - 902350006 - Self locking nut 2 x 17 - 901000109 - Flange bolt 2 x 19 - 20540AA000 - Bolt Lateral Link Outer 4 x 24 - 900335056 - Washer 2 x 26 -20251AA000 - Bush A-Lateral Link (hopefully included in bushing kit) 2 x 31 - 20550AA010 - Nut - self Lock Can anyone confirm if my list will work? If there is anything else i should add or anything I wont need? End game is having a tight non squeeking Forester. That wont be a PITA to put back together or take apart again if required.   9. Just a thought, is there an option to choose US gallons or UK gallons anywhere in the system setup? As this would account for the big difference 40 US mpg would be about 48UK mpg. Just a thought? Maybe I'll start putting the fuel and mileage in my mpg app I use for the Forester, then I can get a proper idea of what it's doing.

Just drove 140 miles back from Aberdeen cruise control set at 70 the whole way, I did have the bike rack on the towbar and 2 bikes, so I could have expected to loose a few mpg, but 39.4, was too low. Now I'm starting to suspect something is wrong I've just had the air filter out and it looks pretty grubby... Considering a "service" was done on the vehicle about 800 miles ago when I first picked it up would you have expected this to be so grubby so soon? I see the service interval at 36 months for the air filter is "inspect, correct or replace if necessary" however it should have been changed at 24 months or 24,000 miles regardless. (car is on 29,994 right now). Thanks for all your help so far. I'm sure we will get to the bottom of it soon!
  11. Thanks guys, its just had a service - or so I'm told by the dealer, so I would expect it to be running well at the moment. As you have said, i will try giving it a blast or two and running through a few tanks of good fuel (its currently about 1/5th of a tank of the original fuel brimmed with Shell Nitro +, will put shell or Nitro + in again at the next fuel up and keep monitoring. It will be interesting to see how the injectors change, as i didnt think it was too spritely last time I drove it... I will let you know how we get on. Thanks again!
  12. Thanks Marcothio, I definatetly seem to be running a lot lower than the norm, 42-43 mpg on an A road run, 50-60mph with fairly few stops. Hopefully a couple of tanks of good fuel will help clear anything out, from what everyone has said, if the previous owner has been using lots of supermarket fuel it might be running a bit rough at the moment. I'll get a few more miles in it this weekend and see what its like. Thanks for everyones input.
  13. Did a forced DPF Clean on the way to drop the car off at the garage for its paintwork and AC, maybe 12 miles in 4th at 70mph, hopefully will have burned everything out, we will see when I pick the car up early next week. :)
  14. Thanks for the replys everyone. Dug those look like some reasonable figures to aspire to. Dogconker - i've just seen your Fuelly notes, and annoyingly this morning put 1/2 a tank of Shell Nitro + in to see if it will help. I think the last owners, and certainly the garage just used supermarket fuel, so thought that some premium with some good detergents might help. As for driving style, most of my previous cars have been diesels. The forester being the first "Daily" car that has been a petrol/LPG. Amy has come from a diesel straight into the XV, so hopefull isnt driving it too badly. Both our commutes are Fast A roads 55-66mph with a little bit of city driving at the end, so I would hope that we could achieve mid to high 40's, I'll force a DPF regen and run this tank of nitro through then hopefully start to see some better figures.     XV MPG

    Hey everyone, I've just picked up my new XV, 2013 Diesel SE. its done 29,000 miles and has just had its 3rd year service Drove it home from the dealers in Falkirk, ~ 35miles, some motorway, mostly A roads, and was only able to get about 39mpg out of it. Took it to Edinburgh (A-roads) and coasted the whole way and managed 51mpg. Girlfriend drove it to work and back and managed about 43mpg. Overall we are sitting about 41/42mpg. which to me doesn't seem quite right. What with the declared average ~50mpg and Extra Urban ~56mpg What are other diesel owners getting? I'm taking it back to the garage on Thursday to get a dodgy paint repair fixed and the aircon re-gassed. wondering if i should bring it up with them. Does the old italian tune up work with an XV - should I race it around for a few miles to burn everything out the exhaust / Clear out the DPF? Other than the Mpg i'm very happy with the car.
  16. Well we picked up our XV on Saturday its so nice to have a car that sounds so solid. Its definately the no frills model, but i'm not that concerned. With 29,000 miles on the clock it has been serviced appropriately, so everything should be good for many more years. I'll hopefully get some pictures up soon. Will have to change my profile picture to show my 2 Subaru's side by side, as I was supprised to see that the XV is actually almost the same size as my SG Forester, it looked so much smaller next to the new Foresters in the Garage. Anyway, I'm happy to be part of your gang now. I expect you will all be answering some silly questions from me soon!
  17. Hey everyone, I'm going to look at an XV tomorrow, 2013 plate, diesel SE with 29,000 miles on the clock. Just had its first MOT. (we are going to trade in the girlfriends 307) Reading everyones reviews it sounds like they should all be good with the exception of possibly one lemon?! It has a detatchable towbar, and we will be using it to tow our 1100kg Caravan put the dog in, and head to the mountains in the winter (essentially everything the Forester does at the moment, but in a bit more comfort) I see some talk about clunky change from 1st to 2nd? or is it down 2nd to first? (The SG Forester I have is bad going down 2nd to 1st so thats not an issue if its the same) and some talk about clutch judder? Is there anything else i should be looking out for? They are asking £13,800 for it, but i'm hoping i can get it down a little. I look forward to joining you as an owner soon!

Backed the forester up in the garage to change the pads, quite a tight fit, rear pads were the wrong ones, front, one side done no issue, round the other side, jacked it up and managed to tip it into the central garage door support without noticing and have creased the rear passenger door! Doh, silly narrow garage. :(
  19. Jedidaveh, I too am suffering some wind noise in my SG, and have yet to find the spline discussed in the video. On Thursday I went to B&Q and could not find it so bought some very small rubber tubing, similar to the hose that runs for the window squirters, I put it in the same place as the chap does in the video, but it has not seemed to work :( Just thought I would let you know in case like me you end up on the experimental route. Good luck finding the spline, and let us know if you ever do!

No Spacers installed, the offset on the original wheels was +45 the offset on these alloys was +55, so a 10mm movement inwards, I had a good check and everything seems to clear on full lock both directions, I might get a 5mm spacer just to be sure, but dont want to mess up the wheel bearings or cause undue stress anywhere. http://www.subaruforester.org/vbulletin/f72/subaru-oem-wheels-fit-forester-19106/ The link above seems to show some +55s working without issues. Going to get everything aligned tomorrow to make sure I've not made a total pig out of it :D
  21. The comments go on to say that "the crankshaft somhow got stuck in the block and engine could not turn around" Possibly oil starvation, so probably best not do it for a prolonged period like this chap does. Looks fun though! :D
  22. OK, so this didn't all happen today, but the works have concluded today, so i have time to tell you what has been done to my "New" SG4 Forester over the last few days. Firstly I have fitted a double din stereo and sat nav unit, as I always get hopelessly lost. Then off with the old springs and on with a set of Pedders "Lowering springs" I say lowering as we descovered that the front had a snapped spring on one side and the rear SLS had failed on one side, so the car only sits very slightly lower than before. However ride comfort and control have been greatly increased. Before During After And Finaly, today these arrived from Saj/Jas at Jap Performance Parts so I can take the winter Studded tyres off! Fitted A busy couple of days, but has certainly got me hooked again and looking forward to some more changes!

  24. Hey, Just been looking at my MOT certificate (PASS) happy days. There are 3 advisory items, two of which i can work out and will sort this weekend. one however has me confused, and I am hoping that you can shed some light on it: 003 Offside front Trailing arm rubber bush deteriorated but not resulting in excessive movement [2.4.G.2] Now obviously this is some sort of rubber bush, somewhere on the offside of the car... however, is it at the front as the name would suggest, or is it the rear, but the front of perhaps a pair of bushes? I've had a scan and fount Rear tie bar to hub front bushes http://www.strongflex.eu/en/search?controller=search&orderby=position&orderway=desc&search_query=271152&submit_search=Search ECP only has anti roll bar bushes (which one of was on the advisory, so all 4 are getting done) But i cant seem to find the Front Trailing arm rubber bush, as described in the MOT anywhere. Can anyone shed some light on what this part is? If it is available readily I will try and pick one up tomorrow so i can look at it while doing roll bar bushes. Thanks for your help
  25. Hi Mr B 100% dead, nothing happening when you push the button. Changed the battery but no change, very strange as it worked moments before, then nothing. Hmm, I tried waiting, but when I start typing the code the little led on tge keypad flashes multiple times, as if it's wrong. Do you just type the 4 digits, or do you need hit * or # beforehand? I'll try out locking the doors then opening them tomorrow, dont fancy waking up the neighbours. Thanks again.
