Are you looking at reinforced tyres ? Everything I search for brings these up, I cant understand why as the forester doesn't weigh much more than the other subarus, at the mo I have two 'triangle' and two 'fedral' brand tyres (on the car when I bought it) looking at the noise and & economy ratings they outperform some premium brands. Well done one the head rebuild your braver than i am ! Have you checked the expansion bottle when hot for signs of overflow or bubbling ? If so its not great news :-( Are you using a genuine subaru thermostat & what coolant are you using ? May be worth popping a new one in just to see if it makes a difference If theres no dramas from the expansion bottle i'd check the rad hoses for cold spots could indicate an air lock, then try burping the system.

Could try api although a rebuild will cost 1200 plus vat for standard parts, Savage was offering a good motor for a good price for your budget you could get it mapped too, no need to run it at it max bhp, as you already have the fmic and what not its a sure fire way to get at least 300bhp from it, Whats the garage said regarding your engine ?
