Err, not sure what that means but if you pull the handbrake on full on an old Landrover the drive shaft can shear off and come up through the passenger footwell.

It was a bit of a tongue in cheek statement and I definitely wouldn't try it on dry roads for fear of the above. I just thought it would be a good idea to know what to expect should I end up going sideways on a patch of ice. So when I found my works carpark empty and full of snow I gave it a whirl. I did a similar thing with my scooby when it snowed last year, thats how I discovered how easy it was to turn the car round without actualy going anywhere lol.

I know, in the snow when I had front wheel drive cars I actually used to use the handbrake to destabilise the car as it's easier to control a front wheel drive in a sideways slide than if it's just going straight on. Not sure what old bill would say.

I'm ashamed to admit to owning a Vandan Plas Allegro for about a month until it failed its MOT. By far the most uncool car ever. Cars I've owned are:

Citroen AX GT

MK1 Golf GTI 1.8

Escort RS2000 4x4

Subaru Impreza turbo

Skoda Fabia VRS TSI

Subaru WRX STI

Haha I remember the bloke next door to us thinking he was the ****** as he had one of those. The 70's & 80's were dark days !

My dad had all manner of British Leyland dross [emoji20] what the hell was everyone thinking with vinyl roofs ? Used to love getting into the marina and having a damp patch on the seat

What was the vrs like DaiP?

The vrs was pretty good to drive. The DSG gearbox was ok once I got used to it and the car handled nicely for a front wheel drive. Not in the same league as either of the Subarus I've had though or the Escort for that matter. I had a couple of problems with it which put me off. It burned oil like a 2 stroke, so I took it in for an oil consumption test and was told it was within acceptable levels so the garage charged me for it. To cut a long story short, I was proved right in the end and ended up with a replacement turbo under warranty but Skoda uk's attitude throughout was really poor.

It was the walnut veneer dashboard and picnic tables in the back that sold it to me. And the brown vinyl roof was the icing on the cake

Ive always found my local skoda dealer fantastic, had some issues with my new octavia and they sent someone strait out to take a look, they was even puzzled, Was going to exchange the car so they could investigate!

The local Skoda dealer I found ok to deal with, it was when I dealt with Skoda uk directly I had problems. I found their attitude really arrogant and unhelpful. Luck of the draw I guess.

Yes, I'd read about the 1.4 drinking oil....is that the only engine of theirs that has this problem, or is the 2.0 octavia vrs blighted by the same problem?

Not sure about the 2 litre, I haven't had first hand experience of it. I don't think all the 1.4's had the oil consumption issues, I've heard of some using no oil to some that were worse than mine and certain engine codes being better than others because at some point there was a breather mod done. The turbo issue on mine became apparent when my missus saw black / brown smoke coming out of the exhaust when she was behind me as I pulled away from traffic lights. After it went in for the turbo the oil consumption was a lot better.

The Fabia vrs does seem to be good value if you want a new-ish, cheap powerful car

Worst looker was Ford Cortina 1.6L estate in highland green!

Worst for road holding was my MG BGT

So my list....

Ford Cortina estate 1.6L

MG BGT

Rover P6 V8S

Triumph Herald convertible

Alfa Romeo GTV

Subaru Impreza GX bug eye

Toyota Innova 7 seater (when in India)

Honda Civic Sport

Subaru Impreza WRX

Alfa and GX were brand new. Others range from 10-39 years old at the time of ownership! Nice buying new but much more fun having something a bit more interesting [emoji3]

My first car was a Fiat Uno.... Never again will i ever drive or own a Fiat.... It really was fix it again tomorrow.  Got it when i was 17 at college and having just passed my test my dodgy car mechanic/salesman uncle got me the fiat for 700 quid. lol it was terribly unreliable. It was shameful tbh.

A friend had a fiat coupe 20v turbo from new...if I remember he had it for a good 10 years. He had loads of problems in the last few years but it was fine for the first 6 ish.

Nope never had one, genuinely. Smallest car I ever owned was a 56 plate civic.

I will confess I took some driving Lessons in one though.

I had 2002 honda civic 1.7 diesel, 2 turbos and an engine gone on it. Incidentally my best car was a 99 v reg toyota avensis 1.8 petrol not a single fault in 4 and a 1/2 years. Sadly written it off on black ice.

I had 3 civics all 2.2 TD all of them faultless, had about 7 yrs of fault free motoring, spuds like you were unlucky, wife had 3 CRV over the same period she had no issues too. Found Hondas really good, left over customer service, or rather lack of
