Hi all

im new to forums but thought I may ask some advise.

i am just about to splash the cash on a 57 plate wrx hawk eye (pick it up Friday :) can't wait), had a 95 wrx jap import several years ago and loved it right up till I begrudgingly had to sell it (bad times). Seeing as the Mrs bought a lotus a couple of weeks ago I thought it was my turn again.

anyways I am kinda travelling a long way to get it and have not actually seen the car in the flesh yet, it's got full service history and 12 months mot so fairly sure it's going to be ok, on the advert it says that it has been remapped to 320bhp is there anyway of telling without paper work or should he have proof off it? I loves the cars but I'm not the most mechanically minded person I mean I can do basic services etc but that's about my limit.

Other than the remapping it is all pretty standard elsewhere, but I do want to start upgrading in the not to distant future I have heard that any upgrades performance wise require it to be remapped each time is this right?

and final question for now :) anyone know of any good reliable scooby speacialist in Devon or Somerset who can fit and or supply upgrades for me?

thanks in advance guys

Hi and welcome. I'm in Dorset and I took my blob to Alan Jeffries (thinks that was his name) in Plymouth. I highly rate them. They will supply and fit anything to do with a scoobys.

Where abouts in the southwest are you?

I'm no expert, but the standard turbo on a WRX (assuming it's not an sti) would be limited to 280-290bhp. To achieve the 320bhp that you say it's advertised you would need more than just a re map. turbo, injectors, air filter etc. So I would check what mods have/not been done. If the car has had a remap the owner should have a dyno printout to show the figures, but again with a tdo4 turbo you will not see those figures. And yes any power gain that you want, most will need a remap.

When looking at car check the underside (wings, sills, subframe etc) for rust. Check oil, water, tyre wear etc. The usual. Would be good to have a fellow southwesterner around and maybe have a run out. Cheers

Oh and experts, please correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks

Oh and also, I assume it's a 5 speed manual. If so the 5 speed box the most you'll get out of it safely without it going bang is about 320-330bhp. The 5 speed is a weaker gearbox than the 6 speed in an sti. Having said that the box could go bang with just 250hp, but should be ok to around 330 tops.

That's some really helpful advice thank you very much. I live near Tiverton in Devon, driving to Rotherham tomorrow to look at/buy it.

so if I wanted to upgrade things on it I suppose I need to be looking at the clutch and gearbox first hand.

realistically if the turbo hasn't been done then there is little or no chance it has been remapped to 330bhp.

I know about checking the basics sills etc just the more advanced stuff that I struggle with.

I suppose if I got stuff fitted by Alan in Plymouth he could re map it anyways??

what does a re map cost these days?

That's a long way to go. Are there none down this way?

Yes if turbo is standard, the most it could be is 280-290. If it just had a remap with standard stuff then I guess your looking at 250-260bhp. A gearbox change (to 6 speed) your looking at around £2k all in. It's not just a 'get a gearbox and swap' job. There are other things to it. And yes clutch while your at it.

They charge £420 all in, if memory serves me right, for a remap.

What mileage does the car have?

What other info do you have. Maybe a link to the ad.

Tiverton isn't too far from me. I got my car not far from there. I live near a town called Bridport. Going towards you, I guess the first town I come to is Axminster. You are about an hour away.

As above is pretty much spot on but if you have a search on here there's a "sticky" thread with a buying guide that covers the main things to look out for [emoji6]

Not rotherham scoobies selling it is it ? / Tony hough.. if it is avoid like the plaque though it sounds better than his usual 1500 quid crappers

FIrst up :

If its a wrx yep its limited to a 280bhp roughly, No reciept of new turbo / remap walk away

so many people claim mods they havent got

Where in rotherham are you getting the car from? If its JCT's hes very reliable. Got both my cars from him.

JCT seem to be building a decent rep, not only with the cars they sell but also standing up and sorting it if something is found to be wrong post sale.

as above, need to confirm exactly whats been done to get it to 320. Needs be pop it over to scoobyclinic and chuck it on their dyno before you head home

Drives lovely took it to scoobyclinic they were awesome told me It needs a good cleanup on the rear underside of the car and there was a oddball tyre on front but apart from that everything is good. Also said the turbo has been upgraded. Then put it on the rolling road. Very happy with it so far been a long day tho.

There's never time to do 2 cars lol. Looks a great car. I've been think about changing my turbo etc to get it over 300bhp (currently 285). Would be good to compare yours and mine, if you fancied a run out one day [emoji1]
