stuartie
The time has finally come to get the bodywork sorted, the usual rear arches and sills are both fubarred and to be honest the paintwork is not that great either so i'm going the whole hog and getting it all done over the dark winter months. will be getting the repair panels at the end of the month and one of the nice blacksmiths at work is going to do all the welding for me. I have been in about the inner wings and strut towers and it's just along the edges of the inner wings that are corroded and the towers are all ok 😁. I have also spoke nicely to the bodyshop just down the road that do loads of classic cars and they are quite happy for me to prep it and strip it all down to keep the costs down and take it to them on a trailer so happy days 👍. I will keep this thread updated as i go along

stuartie
Thanks lads 👍👍, i had a quick go at the strut tops and inner wings with my wee tappy hammer and it seems to be pretty solid also the inner sills are looking good aswell so hopefully not to much hidden rot although i am prepared for anything that turns up, I'm sure the blacksmith will be able to sort it all out as he is fecking good at what he does and is in his element bringing stuff back to life 😃😃 he is always doing the bodywork on all the old vans we have at work and loves it, he even has the tool to crimp the sills so they look oem, really looking forward to helping along the way and keeping this classic on the road 👍
savage bulldogs
Always nice to see a classic getting some TLC, especially a v1 as they're getting thin on the ground and going up in value due to the 25yr old American import eligibility. Think the main areas are inner outer rear arches /sills and suspension turrets plus the Battery tray that tend to be the usual suspects. Best of luck with it stu 👍
stuartie
Cheers buddy 👍, will be good to keep the old girl on the road and the guys at the bodyshop said the same as you that there's not many left on the go and they're more than happy to help me out with getting it back to it's former glory as most folk seem to be breaking them nowadays, will be getting the repair panels next week then the blacksmith can get in about it all, obviously i will be helping as much as i can coz i've been trying to do as much of the work myself but some things are better left to the professionals who will probably do a much better job than i could, at least I'll get taught a few things along the way 👍
savage bulldogs
Tbh I probably enjoy working on and learning about scoobies almost as much as driving them . So good luck , enjoy it and savages top tip would be get a swear tin .. . That way by the time its road worthy you'll have some money for mods 😊
stuartie
Thanks mate and i must agree i enjoy working on them myself aswell, i've done all the work myself up to this point and although i can weld and paint the guys who do it day in day out will do better than i could and i will be helping with the cutting, welding and the prep before paint and I'll be doing the strip down by myself, the blacksmith can't do anything till after the new year now so won't be much happening till then but still can't wait to get in about it all 👍
Falcongary
Glad she getting some TLC save it before it goes to far mine only had a little rust spot coming though I sorted that straight out look nice when it’s all done 👍👍
stuartie
Rear bumper off this morning and all looks good all the metal is solid and not much sign of rust which is good, the blacksmith who is doing the welding seems to be quite happy so now its time to order the panels i'm going to get them from that place on facebook automotive repair panels as they seem to get a good rep 👍👍
stuartie
Got the panels ordered yesterday so should be here monday then hopefully the blacksmith can get on with it quite soon and it'l actually feel like i'm getting somewhere with it 👍
savage bulldogs
Doesn't look as bad as some I've seen, on my old v3uk the rear strutt tops and bumper mounts had almost completely disappeared 😥 Pull the boot linings out and check the rear arch "wheel wells" and seams around the rear strutt tops , if you haven't already done so stu .
stuartie
Yeah the boy thats doing the welding said it wasn't that bad aswell he even went as far as saying he could fix it with his eye's shut 😂, i've already got the boot stripped out bud and all looks good inside so hopefully all goes well and we don't find any more rot as we go 👍

stuartie
We will see mate i still have to get it rubbed down and painted but the funds have been taking a bit of a hit with life getting in the way lol 🤣, just had to spend on my daily £170 for front discs and pads and an abs sensor 😡, at least i can do myself i suppose so that saved a wee bit and with it being a mild winter so far i'm not making much on standby because the gritters aren't out much so the steering wheel attendants aren't getting a chance to break them, also ment to say I'll be painting inside the skins of the arches and sills with stuff called black knight which is a rust inhibitor it goes on white and turns black the blacksmiths use it on bridge's and the gritters to stop corrosion so if it's good enough to stop a bridge falling down i'm sure it'l be good enough for the scoob 😂, hows your motor going Ross

Thanks mate, no never got them from Ray as i tried for a couple of days to phone but no answer and you can't buy them through the Facebook page and the website was down for updating so got them on the bay from George Barber panels in Cleveland, according to boys at the work they took over hadrian panels a few years back but not sure if thats true or not, anyway i got a little more done tonight started with the plasma cutter to make up the last part of the inner wing edge Then once that was welded in a covered with a coating of zinc anti corrosion paint the panel was welded in Another coating of zinc paint then a skim of filler and smooth down Still a bit of work to go but it's starting to look better already 👍
stuartie
Done a wee bit more today after working in the morning, got the passenger side buffed ready to cut out and weld in new panel Then just some filling and sanding on the drivers side Then a coat of zinc primer Its all starting to come together 👍👍
