Are you getting the 2618 race spec with Teflon coated skirts or the 4032 's ?

As I've found the 2618' s to be a bit over kill for my build (road car) and therefore still noisy during normal driving temps .

My engineer was well impressed with the quality though and they do quiten down but only when spanked hard

I've gone for the 4032's for exactly that reason. I can't stand piston slap, although it s a different type of sound, every time I hear it, it takes my mind straight to big ends knocking.

I know what you mean not every morning more when it's - over night I hear mine in the morning and start to worry  :unsure:

Gaskets and heads have been dropped at the machine shop. They are going to fit the work in around other work so it can take up to two weeks. That's fine by me. Over the next two weeks, I won't have a lot of time to work on it anyway, and doing it this way, I'm getting a bit of a discount.

Wish my postman would bring me presents this time of year :( Just bills at the minute ;) 

And two weeks like you said wasn't a job you was rushing yourself so worth the wait with discount :) And I'm sure plenty of other stuff can be getting on with in the mean time on the car too.

What time I have between now and when the heads come back, I will refresh the short motor and fit the new pistons and head studs.

Plenty to be getting on with. I must remember to buy some new valve stem seals too.

Yeah I've never built a engine thats supposed to be noisy before ( dont get me wrong its only a ticking noise ) but ,It's probably the only thing I regret about the choices I made for components on my build, as I only went for the 750 hp ones to match the Brian crower rods .

what oil pump are you going to use tlag and are you gonna go fmic straight away due to your tmic having to many entries ?

The oil pump is a tough decision. I have heard so many different schools of thought on different sizes. Whichever option I look at, I see arguments for and against. I may just have to go with what I feel is right, which would be the 11mm.

The plan at this stage is go fmic from the start. I don't have one yet but I don't have a single entry tmic either so I may as well go front mount.

I also need to get an Impreza style radiator and expansion tank. In fact, I still have quite a few smaller items to get.

I got a phone call first thing this morning from the machine shop who are going to do my heads. They were just making sure they had the right information and that I was happy with what they were doing.

For me, that's great customer service and it also means they probably started work on them today. :)

I always like to get them call too. My local mate not a specialist just a mechanic he will always give me a ring just to double check thing's. Gives me confidence and like you said doesn't hurt to give a good service as something as small as a call.

Yeah oil pump choice is s minefield of options I went for a rcm pump which is standard in size/ pressure but, has a uprated pressure relief valve to safeguard against failure . As I'm not running a aftermarket oil cooler and didn't think it was necessary to increase the oil pressure.

I've got a few classic bit's in the man cave that might be of use ...

nearly new rad ,3 port boost solenoid , v3 sti inlet manifolds, tmic and pipework .

so if you do need anything that you can't source locally drop me a pm fella and I'll help out if I can ;-)

Some actual work done today, plus parts ordered and money spent.

 

Today I stripped the short motor in order to clean it all throughout and fit new bearings. 

 

It started on the engine stand, loosening bolts and a general inspection.

Next, it was transferred to the strip down bench and pistone removed.

Then the block halves were split. Unusually, they almost fell apart. They dont normally like being split. :)

The crank was then removed and examined.

The con rods were removed from the crank and examined. Everything looks spot on, although for peace of mind, I was always going to change the bearings anyway.

I dropped the crankcase halves off to have a very light skim and to be totally cleaned up. I can collect those tomorrow.

 

I then dropped in to my suppliers and picked these up.

I have also ordered an oil pump, (10mm modified should be fine), a RCM sump baffle plate,  a set of valve stem seals and a rear cranck oil seal. :)

 

Yesterday, I also bought this.

I think I may need to clean that blood off before I use it though. :lol:  :lol:

I must have spent 3hrs or so trying to split my casings lol

looking good keep the pics comming bud :-)

I was advised to use a few things on my build (by a rally engine builder)

subaru exhaust stem seals for inlet and outlet cos their made for higher temps (different lesser composite vitron rubber used for the inlets) .

Group N cork sump gasket.

The earlier hydraulic timing belt tensioner rather than the later spring loaded one (as they're stronger)

And I went for a gates kevlar timing belt as I've read they're made in the same factory as the cossie ones but about £80 cheaper .

sorry if I'm" teaching my gran to suck eggs " as I know your a scooby veteran Tlag but ,just thought I'd share what few £'s saving advice I've been given ;-)

I hadnt considered using a gasket on the sump, so thats a good one to know.  Likewise the info on the valves stem seals.

 

It may be quiet for a few days now until bits arrive, I need to spend time searching the workshop for some build bits that I put safe a long time ago. So safe, I no longer know where they are :lol:

I was going to say the engine didn't look in bad condition at all. But I agree better to get it opened and check and swapped for peace of mind.

And is the Blood your's Tlag or the last person who didn't wait for the green man before crossing :D 

And 2nd the Savages comment about the pictures. :D

great story so far - Savage you Tlag and others all sharing on the forum means its there for comparative novices like myself so even if it is news to the more experienced its great info and I learn something new :)

 

Im filing it all away for my dream 22b rep, gobstopper homage :P
