subdriver
Hello, I looked at what i think is the header tank or cooler expansion tank. It seems empty. The car was not running and cold. The car has not overheated and runs fine. Should i top up when the car is at running temperature or cold? What im talking about is the container with yellow cap on the front of the engine to the right, not the screen wash...lol. Thanks for any advice or help. majik_thighs
When the engine is up to temp the header tank allows the expanded fluid (water) to find a place to live. Otherwise there would be BANG......SSSSHHHHH! Sent from my Galaxy S6 edge using Tapatalk
majik_thighs
When cold the header tank should be more or less empty. Sent from my Galaxy S6 edge using Tapatalk
stants
There's a min line about 2inch from the bottom of the tank so just fill to where the neck opens up a bit.

I take it that i need to fill up (sorry.... top up) to minimum level when the engine is cold. Should the level be at mid point when engine is warm? stants
****** sorry deleted the last post read it as a duplicate, Re header tank between half way and if you look carefully there's a max line there too
majik_thighs
Sometimes its a good idea to ask questions to reinforce what you think you already know.....better than going BANG.....lol Always top up when cold!.......as water heats up it expands....hence the expansion tank and why there needs to be room therein. As it cools down again the excess water is allowed to join in the fun back in the radiator with it`s watery friends.

Dogconker
Somehow managed to average 40mpg last week ? 28.1litres= 6.1 gal ÷257 miles Of my maths is wrong please shoot me On another note, about to set off to Elvington for the jgm memorial I think your maths is slightly out 257/6.1 is 42.1mpg, but you actually used 6.18 gals if the 28.1 l is correct 28.1 litres is actually 6.18 gal 257 miles / 6.81 = 41.59mpg So you actually did better than you thought you did [emoji2] Anyway, I don't want to rain on your parade, but I'm going too [emoji6] I just got back from 3 days in Scotland covered 1057 miles, put £98 of fuel in it. £98 @ 1.209/l is 81litres (17.8 gals) 1057/17.8 = 59.38mpg [emoji41] (Obviously mine's diesel so slightly unfair comparison) Sent from my iphone using Tapatalk

stants
Haha even better, no idea how I managed it to be fair Haha long run to whitby with the family probably helped as just cruised up and back again then the rest was all urban ish,
Dogconker
That's pretty good for a petrol to be fair. If you used cruise control a lot that will reduce fuel consumption. Sent from my iphone using Tapatalk
majik_thighs
I was being sarcastic dog..........we 3.0 runners can only dream of those figures. I was thinking of a change and going for an oil burner but these things run so sweet I would regret it. I`d miss the power.
