the thickness of the oil shouldn't be related to loss - it will however help (as will slick 50) with a noisier engine attributed to wear through higher miles, you mention burning oil but there is no smoke or deposits in the exhaust? It must be going somewhere - I would do more checks for smoke and keep an eye on the coolant - has the engine ever been rebuilt?

it is but unfortunately the chap is being forced to break it so if your interested I would contact him asap before bits go individually

Have mentioned it in other thread but Bazza if it was me I would take the time and have a look - just ignore the gearbox price as I believe that is miss leading you

those are some smooth curves, no holes or flat spots there if you upload them to a hosted site (eg photobucket) and post the link that works best

Bazza - £800 is within your budget - ignore the gearbox, confirm it will fit your existing box - stick a new clutch in whilst you have it apart and just turn the power down

Wotcha and welcome - as mentioned the performance difference is quite small between WRX and STI - its things like suspension & hub components, brakes and gearbox that are more significant but that is something that can be addressed in the long term should you wish
