Anyone changed from Blob/Bug to a Hatch?

I have now owned my Impreza hatch for 3 weeks now and i must say every day i get more impressed by it. I do on average 70 miles a day and its quiet, comfortable and obviously has that bit of poke when you get some moron on your bottom!

I am averaging 26.4mpg which is a lot less than my Fiesta Zebec S Tdci but hey its far more enjoyable to drive! Trust me you won't regret getting one!

The decision I think I now need to make is whether to get a WRX and light mod it or get a STI.

Im doing 94 mikes a day and want comfort but I'm running 272bhp at the moment and I don't want a slower car [emoji2]

I'm getting from this conversation that I shouldn't buy a STI and mod it...how safe is modding a WRX Hatch?

Taking a standard STI the prodrive route to 330bhp as in the 330s model will be fine - Subaru themselves don't recommend taking the standard internals past that. The CS400 has different internals which is why it is able run the 400bhp o/p.

I don't know much about tuning the WRX other than the original discussions we had relating to the early WRX hatch was lower on power than the later ones (diff turbo I believe).

Was looking at a white wrx this morning - nice looking motor but def needs a bigger spoiler on the hatch :D

How much was that Alex? For newage its quite a lot less to do it yourself...and you end up with a better result specifically tailored to your car rather than a generic map etc.

Jay, thanks. I'm getting up to speed with the various models. I saw an STI or 330 the other day with quite a large spoiler on the back...looked to me like it had been designed by a 4 year old  ...just my own opinion so please no-one get emotional if you have one. Looks like its sold now because I can't find it now.

If I go for a STI would it be safer (less engine failure prone) to get a car with 30k + miles on it? I've read people say if it hasn't happened by then you're probably going to be fine. (ignoring failure due to mods).

It was about £1500 and take 4-5 days to do so a lot cheaper to do it yourself. Which is what I will be doing.

Jay,

Can I ask your opinion on the ad below please?

I've searched for the garage and they seem to have a bad rep...mainly people moaning about them being overpriced...but this 330S (if it is one) looks a stunning price for crazy low mileage....it's just they are around 5 hrs drive away from me!!

Having trouble viewing it -- every time I open it my laptop freezes - will try a bit later when its not quite so obvious I am constantly rebooting my laptop in the middle of meetings I am supposed to be taking more than a passing interest in :o)

Perhaps prices have gone up then  :o

I've seen a number of private 330s for sale at around £14k for 50kmiles....not sure whether any will sell for that tho.  I've also seen some standard STIs with low mileages (26k ish) go for £15k...so I thought it was a pretty good price.

I've been reading up about the dealer today....it doesn't make pretty reading. They seem to get a bad rep then change their name frequently. So I don't think I'll be making the 10hr round trip to see it. I'd pop round to see it if it was local. If it's a good car I'd be brave enough to buy from a dodgy dealer....i think

  • 2 weeks later...

Having come from the other way about (hatch-saloon) thought I'd add my two pence worth , hatch much more comfy to drive and a little more sedated yet refined ,hard to put your finger on but it just is

As an all rounder the hatch is a lot better in terms of practibility and versatility ,much easier with kids and day to day driving in the hatch over the saloon and tbh can get away with a lot more in a hatch than saloon too as much more stealthy

No one bats an eyelid in the hatch were as my saloon sticks out like a sore thumb

In all honesty love my saloon but much preferred the practicality of the hatch and the fact it was so under the radar with idiots and people thinking you want a race at every set of lights

Trust me you'll end up loving the hatch , took mine everywhere inc running my freshly built engine in getting up to the top of moal-famau

In the bad snow

And ya know what apart from my fella nearly in tears (he built motor) my trusty little hatch made it all the way up the top even when some range rovers couldn't lol

Enjoyed wiping smiles of their faces as I flew past them in a blur of wheel spin on my way to the top hahaha whilst they were stuck

Ps motor still going strong now 2.5 years on my fella thinks he's a great engine builder hahaha , I say it's more the way it was ran in

:)
