My thinking exactly. Plus the other half is away this week so I can get it all delivered and on the car without her knowing a thing 😉

My fairly straightforward “just pop the engine out, change the rocker gaskets, cambelt and pop a new clutch in” has turned out to be anything but! It was all going well until we went to undo the engine mounts and discovered one of the nuts had been rounded off!! Still wouldn’t budge with a chisel taken to it, but now have some of those sockets that supposedly grip onto rounded nuts and bolts. Managed to get the engine out by undoing the mount from the block. Along the way there was also a couple of vac lines that are completely disintegrated and so started the shopping list! I’m now waiting on some new blue silicone lines, downpipe gasket and while shopping I came across a reasonably priced japspeed alloy radiator- now on the hunt for a header tank to match. Tonight I’ve been down to the garage and cleaned up the subframe and stonechipped the front u-frame to smarten things up a bit. Now I’ve got 4 more evenings after work to get her up and running ready for Japfest on Sunday 😂.

Once a speed sensor fault has been detected it’ll put the car into limp mode. It could be one of 2 things: 1) Your speed sensor is knackered 2) The gubbins that converts the speedo from kmph to mph is playing up. This seems more likely because it involves splicing things into wires behind the clocks. Apologies for the vagueness, electrics really isn’t my forte 😂

Code 33 is a speed sensor issue... Has your speedo been changed to read in mph?

This is purely an idea, but if you took your bumper off, you should find that the grille is clipped on from behind. If you can remove it, you should be able to reform the shape, then re-attach it. On the up side, at least it’s done it’s job and kept your a/c condenser and radiator in one piece!!

Welcome to the club! Looks a lovely example. I previously owned 2 gen 2 legacies and will always have a soft spot for them. Any plans for this one?

I’ve got the same job this weekend 👍

I remember that! Owner must’ve been gutted

Have a look on importcarparts.co.uk

There’s 2 belts. The on there is your power steering and alternator belt. The other one is for your air conditioning pump. I’d have a look on importcarparts.co.uk, good prices for good quality parts. Everything you need is here.... https://www.importcarparts.co.uk/parts?cat=96&sub=183&sec=331&var=23&dc=y

I wouldn’t worry about the fog too much. Sometimes a hairdryer can help a bit but you should find as the weather dries out it’ll sort itself out. If you stick to your service schedule religiously I don’t see any reason why it won’t. The N/A Subaru engines are pretty reliable on the whole, 99% of the time it’s poor maintenance that kills them, not any fundamental design flaws.

Welcome. You’re right, they really have something about them that other cars just can’t seem to tick the boxes! I’d say the gearbox sounds fairly normal to be honest, they have a habit of being a bit juddery, although it might be worth getting somebody to check over all the bushes and mounts on the gearbox and diff just to double check. I find mine will only ever really want to go into first from a complete standstill. Reverse is exactly as you describe too, it’ll go in a lot easier with a slower motion, I think it’s probably designed that way to stop you doing it by accident while driving along. Change gear at whatever revs feels right, the engines are designed to withstand being revved to the limiter that’s on there, obviously not all the time though. I would say it’s fairly important to let the car come up to temperature before giving it too much of the loud pedal, I tend to keep mine under 3kish rpm during this time. Good general maintenance, regular oil changes - every 3000 miles is ideal. Cambelt at the proper intervals (can’t remember it now but I’m sure someone will). Get into a good habit of checking your oil and coolant regularly, weekly will be fine. Most of all, keep enjoying it!

Yeah I’m always slightly concerned about that cat destroying itself and my turbo with it. Decat up-pipes are pretty cheap too... Stop making me spend money!! 😂

Ive asked a local club that aren’t attending if any members would like to join to up the numbers a bit.

That’s certainly a voice of experience. I am debating putting in the decat downpipe I’ve got in while I’m there, but then I’ll have to get it mapped and the list will go on and on!

I was getting fed up of smelling burning oil every time I put the heater fans And decided that’ll it be much easier to pull the engine out to do it. Then talked myself into the fact I may as well do a bit of future proofing while it’s out. So this morning I spent a slightly eye watering amount this morning ordering new rocker cover gaskets, cambelt kit, rear crankshaft seal and an Exedy pink box clutch. Hopefully get all this sorted the weekend after next and have it all back together in time for Japfest 🙄.

Just got my 2 with no problems

1997 Legacy hose and electrical loom layout
WideSam replied to Colin.21's topic in Subaru How-To Section
Do you still have your old engine with all the engine loom in place? If so it’s probably easiest do take the inlet manifold off of that, taking note of where everything was disconnected from, and put it on your new engine. This should help with the vacuum hoses. -
Welcome! I’ll always have a soft spot for these, my first Subaru was a gen 2 legacy. I’m fairness they’re pretty rare, most of this age are wagons and seem to be less and less common. I imagine that colour will look great with a good clean and a polish too. No such thing as a daft question!

New Cornwall Owner, 2002 Bug to Blob conversion
WideSam replied to thxxx's topic in New Members Introductions
Welcome! Where about a in Cornwall are you? Also a few pics are always encouraged 👍 -
Just realised you didn’t actually mention ARBs... 😂. But they will make a difference. I had a strut brace on my legacy, can’t say I noticed much difference but they must be doing something. Plus they add a nice touch to the engine bay.
