thehulkster699
Hi guys, Why would this silver/grey diff unit be leaking on a new car? Is it something to do with the AWD system yes? Big problem? I'm going to call Derek Slacks in the morning.....
Jay762
its the rear diff and you are correct it should not be leaking
thehulkster699
Chuffing heck. Derek Slacks is my closest dealer and is 30 miles away. Not happy. Does anyone know if the unit can be topped-up? Or will there be enough oil in there still? Don't think it's been leaking long/much?
dan
The upper plug on the diff is the fill plug. Removing it and sticking your finger in is the only way of checking the level. If theres still oil in there 30 miles shouldn't be a problem. I'd wait for the dealers advice though
thehulkster699
Just found this recent thread......seems there might be a problem http://www.iwsti.com/forums/2015-sti-discussion/271050-take-time-check-your-rear-diff.html
stants
I wouldn't open it mate any excuse for a dealer to wriggle out of a problem and they will. Call them up tell them it's leaking and you want the car recovered at at their expense. After all you've just shelled out the thick end of 25k. these things happen on new models, but why take the risk of invalidating a warranty
thehulkster699
Yeah buddy, I've not gone near it. Subaru can sort it out. Just don't like taking my pride and joy to a dealer and leaving it - had too many bad experiences.
stants
I feel your pain ! Are you taking it to where you bought it from ?
thehulkster699
I can't. I live in North Yorkshire, but bought the car from Perkins Ford/Subaru in Essex. I tell you, it's the best sale they ever made as I can't take it back there for anything as it's nearly 5 hours away from me.
stants
:-( Kt green in leeds have always been spot on I guess it's luck of the draw with dealers. Hopefully the phone call tomorrow will bring some good news for you
thehulkster699
Update: phoned Derek Slacks this morning, emailed my pic of the diff and they said bring it down ASAP. Got there this afternoon, and after an hour or so they have ordered some new seal. The leak is small, there is no risk to the diff being damaged. They will contact me when it's come in and they said they will keep my car a few hours. On a bonus note...the godawful vibration in the passenger door from new is now gone. I mentioned it when I arrived and they have whipped the door card off and sorted the noise out. Result. Well done Slacks.
alastair01
Mines leaking as well. Its already been back to the dealer once. Going again next week.
Gambit
:( not good strange for the diffs to be leaking :( must be a common fault if both are doing it.
ScoobyDev
Oh damn... Just looked under mine and there's what can only be described as green 'goop' on the underside of the diff... It's not visible dripping though, does that mean it's leaking? I have no idea of the consistency of the oil that's meant to be in there? Gambit
I'd wipe it and keep an eye on it mate but does maybe sound like like it could be possible. :( clearly a little more than a one of it seems :(

ScoobyDev
Le bugger... It's booked into the garage next Friday for some rattles and whatnot. I'll give them a ring tomorrow and see what they say!
thehulkster699
From what you describe your looking at the waxy protection that's painted on the diff. You would defo know if you had a leak as it WOULD be leaving oil marks on your drive buddy.
ScoobyDev
Oh okay, that makes me feel a bit better then! Thanks! There's definitely no drips and no oil spots on the drive. I'm guessing I probably shouldn't have just put a massive finger smudge in the waxy protection then!! :( I'll just ask them to take a look over it when I drop it in next week I think! Highspirits
Has anyone seen anymore evidence of this, I'm only 2 1/2 weeks in but already up to 1600 miles. I've been keeping an eye on it but hoping that the late build date of my car will mean it might have been resolved in the build process. Fingers remain crossed. Gambit
I was on about this yesterday funny enough interested to know myself
ScoobyDev
For what it's worth, I had the garage give it a good check over when I took it in... There was no evidence of a leak, what I was seeing was just the waxy protection that's applied to the underside of the car. So it doesn't appear to be happening to all of them. I'm at just over 2k miles now.
thehulkster699
I'm taking mine into Derek Slacks on the 31st to get the leak sorted. Some seal has been ordered for it.
thehulkster699
FFS. My petrol cap cover won't open now. It's not springing open. Could have been a major problem as I was on the fuel warning light nowhere near home. I had to get someone in the petrol station to pull the release lever in the driver footwell, while I carefully used the thin cardboard parking clock/disc to prise it open carefully without scratching any paintwork. Another job to be done on the 31st.
