idle air control valve
savage bulldogs replied to stants's topic in Subaru Engines, Exhausts and modifications
I have removed one before when I switched all the bits over onto my painted inlet. I polished the outside , sprayed brake cleaner through it and refitted it with a new gasket .it only took 20 mins but the inlet was off the car ;-) If you're looking for faults I'd have a good look at the black rubber diaphragm (that sometimes falls out when you remove the icv) As one of my diaphragms had a slight split in it -
Engine model?
savage bulldogs replied to imranlaa's topic in Subaru Engines, Exhausts and modifications
I've never seen the symptoms of a blown head gasket so can't say for sure , but it dose look like it's pressurising the water system to me. as for which engine you need to replace it has it been remapped ? (If your injectors are yellow then it probably has) If not pop your passenger's foot carpet up ,remove the kick plate to reveal the ecu see what code is on it and google the code to find out which engine it's for ;-) If you have got a mappable ecu id go for a v1 to v4 sti engine , put your shiny inlet and auxiliaries on it and get it remapped anyways -
If it's not been mapped before and running standard boost I think you'd be quite surprised at the difference the half bar of extra boost will make that you'd get from a decated upipe and remap . Should increase the power to about 280 mabye 290 which with a quicker spooling tdo4 would beat a standard sti in a 0 to 60 run ;-)

new member owned for 2yrs big problems
savage bulldogs replied to kevro5s's topic in New Members Introductions
Well spotted gambit , I just read he'd changed the o2 sensor :-) If the cat still glows though it surely must be running hot (lean) , the timings out (so it ignites fuel when the exhaust valve is open) or it's a intermittent spark failure causing unburnt fuel to ignite in the exhaust /cat . Can't think why else the cat would get hot .... if the cats not hot I'd ignore my ramblings and check the maff / coil pack like they said lol . -
Much cleaner look nice work :-) how much was the kw's service they look brand new bud

Hi and welcome to soc ,sorry to hear you've got problems due to the cat glowing I'd suggest checking the cat isn't collapsing blocking the exhaust system when hot . Or fuelling ( ie fuel filter/pump/regulator ) as a lack of fuel would cause a hotter combustion . Have you reset the ecu or disconnected the earth to clear faults after trying new parts ? Best of luck keep us posted ;-) -

Both my previous remaps were done on the road and the last one wasn't to much fun as simon recons I was running about 340 hp ,we'll definitely enough to break the 5 speed 2 days later .after about the tenth full throttle run in short period my kevlar pads we're starting to fade a bit and the traffic was getting a bit heavier and scoob a bit faster ;-) Anyways I had a rolling road shortly afterwards and only showed 294 /270 @ 20 psi (1.37 bar) turned out not been running the full new map ( a mixture of two maps instead) as my alarm system had kept cutting the power to the ecu during the transfer of simons box breaking map So in short once simon unplugged his lap top I'd reverted back to a hybrid map , which simon then came back and tweeked the map for free on the road to make sure I was running safely . im unsure what power I've been running but do know once it's mapped the tdo5 will be the only thing stopping me breaking the 350 barrier cos everything else (clutch , box, injectors ect ) is good for 420 ish -
A lot of people say the bottom ends go after headgaskets or head damage , i know their not a "clearance" engine (the pistons can hit the valves) scoobs are the same as any other second hand car , just more likely to be owned by people that like powerful motors . there's plenty of 150k mls + scoobs running the original engine and box. Unfortunately if services and mechanical sympathy are forgotten they will fail. some people think you can hit the loud peddle without warming up or bolt mixture changing mods onto them without mapping

Quite a productive weekend for me again gave the decat a clean up and wrapped the top section with some heat wrap .which is made from the itch'iest stuff know to man :-( As I had to handle it a lot due to not adjusting the top mounting bracket before I wrapped it , to allow for the extra size of the 6 speed gearbox . Ideally due to running maffless I needed a intake temperature sensor so the mapper can trim the fuel finer because he has a reading of the temperature/ density on the incoming air . I fitted it to the fmic pipework just before the throttle body . also relocated my adjustable fuel pressure regulator as it was cable tied due to being fitted to the tmic I used to run . you can see them both in this pic Although I'll be running off boost again :'( my last test for boost leaks I had I slight whistle @1 bar and had tracked it down to the temporary recirculation pipework I had made to get the car up and running . so I cut a ally elbow off my spare uk turbo tmic and made a hard pipe elbow which don't look to pretty but she now boosts to 1.4 bar and holds it :-) just need simon @ JGM to work his magic should be at the end of the month cos he's proppa busy mapping a few time attack/race cars . -
What have you done to your Subaru today ?
savage bulldogs replied to stants's topic in General Subaru Chat
I hope cos you've found another scoob matt ??? As for me I've spent most of the weekend fitting the cusco decat , air intake temp sensor and relocating my fuel pressure regulator :-) -
It's running a 5 speed killing 347 hp@1.2 bar , it's only not having bigger injectors that's holding it back . It's a sweet sounding engine if I hadn't had built my engine it would have gone in my own scoob . if my brv didn't already own 3 cars a 1000cc aprilla and a crosser (greedy fooker lol ) or someone gave him £4k for it we wouldn't be breaking it , but hopefully I'll use the v1sti shell for my project so it won't go to the scrappy in the sky ;-)
-
It's running a 5 speed starter motor , flywheel and uprated exedy clutch at the moment the engine will fit any v1 to v4 car but if you had the other supporting mods that are on it ..... it would break your 5 speed I'm running a v1sti long block in my 97 (v3) uk turbo, so it will definitely fit yours just don't turn the wick up ;-)

Silicone hose
savage bulldogs replied to gary88ross's topic in Subaru Engines, Exhausts and modifications
Try searching for "v5/v6 turbo inlet hose " a samco one will set you back about £200 but there's cheaper options. if you intend to run higher boost than standard beware of dirt cheap ones , as they've been known to suck flat . -
Turbo timer
savage bulldogs replied to gary88ross's topic in Subaru Engines, Exhausts and modifications
Because the engine's still running while the cars unattended . My alarm system has a hiden switch and turbo timer built in but, if you open any door while it's running the alarm cuts the engine, immobilises the car and set the alarm off . -
Tidied that up nicely gary are you gonna be painting anything else ?
-
It's the charcoal cannister which basically takes the fuel vapour (from the tank/fuel lines) and sends it back into the intake pipework to be burnt of in the engine

Cheers gary , will admit it's not as mint close up lol well I suppose it has done 3k miles now . doesn't leak any oil or water but having a scoop seems to chuck a lotta !Removed! over yer shiny bits :-) This arrived friday a divorced wastegate cusco decat with egt sensor :-) Guess I'd better get some heat wrap and gaskets on order ;-) -
Engine model?
savage bulldogs replied to imranlaa's topic in Subaru Engines, Exhausts and modifications
Is yours a early classic ? As all v1 wrxs and sti's had cdb's and tdo5's , it was (basically ) just forged internals , higher lift cams and a more aggressive map that separated the two . Although a cdb is stronger it will only be as strong as the components it contains and therefore might be better off selling the knackered cdb on (for about £ 350) to recoup some £'s after you've fitted a replacement engine . -

Painted my rusty blue bracket ;-) I'll get some mesh made up to cover the intercooler eventually but for now I managed to trim and re fit the old lower grill -

savage bulldogs replied to savage bulldogs's topic in Subaru Build Threads
gary a good uk turbo engine would push enough power to break any standard classic drivetrain so unless your aiming for 350 hp + it doesn't really matter to much if it has sti cams and pistons ( if it isn't a sti the insurance would be a bit cheaper anyways) as for my project my ocd got the better of me again and I had booked the day off work so I removed the bumper and fettled :) I wasn't to happy with the height of the intercooler and dropped it 25mm on some spacers ,re routed the fuel lines , made some temporary pipework up for the recirc (which whistles a bit at 1 bar ) and relocated my fuel pressure reg pics to follow -

I Think on here http://uk.subaruownersclub.com/forums/topic/3286-model-codes-for-jdm-and-uk/#entry17019 it looks like a v2/v3 wrx -
Can you either give me a few details (what software ,mods, how many maps ect) or better still drop simon a email mention me ( clive ) and attowes at norwich. so he has a idea of how much extra time he'll need to book in for both of us . he did quite a discount for me and my brvs joint booking last year ;-)
