does sound like synchro issue and as you have done an oil change with no difference the oil treatments may not sort it out

agreed had chamfered holes and had no problems with cracking

could be turbo oil seal on way out (most probable) or valve stem oil seals maybe or piston rings possibly. if it becomes constant its most likely turbo

You may want to consider changing the gearbox oil and putting in an additive to help with lowering friction

just checked it out - does look like a good place to start again - given you have done some research and lined up an alternative you could be in a great position to negotiate. also wrt the 96k if you want to lavish time and some money on it to bring it up to the previous standard chances are you would replace all of the mileage worn components anyway, bushes, rings etc
