Subaru a yobs car ?
Classy - smart yet casual

all clean
You could and again lovely piece of kit I have heard the service intervals are horrendously short and include things like laser alignment of all wheels every-time etc - obviously its the price you pay for such a highly engineered machine so it would mean looking at total cost of ownership of both would be nice to be given the choice though ;)

Legacy Diesel Cold Start Noise
As above plus dependant on the service history you may want to consider a service with a flush - at 70k had my diesel van done using BG products flush and now run with their oil additive in with the fresh oil, it cleaned all the deposits out quietened it right down and the engine ran 15 degrees cooler.

all clean
That is a really clean car - and you do indeed have a tough choice to make but what would you gain, exclusivity is lower the ICE wont measure up to the 3K build you have... if it was me I would hold on to the RB until I had enough to get a Cosworth - and then swop the ICE across :D

Update Pictures
it was oil starvation to the turbo that did it, even though I kept being told it was my driving (predominantly motorway miles) caused by blocked tubes. but I know what to look for now ;)

what engine oil
ditto - fully synthetic 10W-50 - ensure it has a JASO or API standard conformance and you should be fine. My Subaru manual gives quite a range of choice 1.5lt - 2.0lt 10W-30, 10W-40, 10W-50, 5W-30, 0W-20 - with a recommendation of the 0W-20 - however I was advised that would be too light as when the engine is stopped it all runs straight to the sump any residual cooling effect is lost and on start up there is little in the way of lubrication. 2.5lt turbo 10W-30, 10W-40, 10W-50, 5W-30 - with a recommendation for 5W-30

Very nice - like that, ever since 1st turbo experience with the 200sx years ago and getting stiffed from an alleged reputable tuner expert oil temp, pressure and turbo boost monitoring I believe are pretty essential. Went through x3 turbo rebuilds inside a year each one with a 360 degree thrust bearing, not cheap at the time but hey you pay to learn

Like the idea of going from blue to red with the lights to match the dash would look great - now added to the ever increasing list

I'm looking at putting some gauges - particularly oil pressure and temp but wouldn't want the noise on start-up, that's when I'm listening for rattles etc

That's a great pressie - she obviously has taste is the 'beeep' from the gauges, can you turn it off?

Lifting Subaru Forester
Measuring as you are doing will give a rough idea if you are comparing a like for like measurement with an assembled unit on ebay The length of the spring will be a big contributor to the ride height - you can have a damper with two different springs and one will sit lower if the spring is shorter. The strut you have doesn't look like a higher spec coil over setup so wont have adjustable ride heights to worry about. If you separate the spring from the damper then you will be able to see just how much it was compressed by the damper / or not as the case may be. Doing that you will also be able to see how much the damper extends so you may be able to get away with just changing the springs instead of the whole unit

Speed Cameras Or Greed Cameras
I agree they are more to do with greed than any traffic calming - I am all for 20 mph outside schools to be enforced with cameras during the main hours of coming and going sitting on dual carriageways that are not associated with fatalities is just swelling the coffers and I have had one or two cough ahem points in my time associated with speeding, never been dangerous driving or over the limit etc and never in built up urban areas

Help with paintwork...
Found a few stone chips in the bonnet when I was detailing the other week - The paint and lacquer doesnt seem that thick so my plan was to have the whole bonnet done and have a couple of decent coats of lacquer to try and maintain the look once finished. I have seen chips away work before and the colour match was fine - although that was on a Ford It should be said though whilst Im not classed as OCD - when it comes to my cars and bikes I am a little bit on the fussy side ahem and things do bug me if not right
