Mapping Disaster please help

Bit of a long story

So when i bought my car a classic WRX JDM i took it for a dyno run and it came out with 231bhp . I have done a lot of modifications to it to achieve what a lot of people told me would easily make 300bhp so i booked it in at Eurospec for a new simtek ecu and remap. I was then told the car wasn't boosting properly only producing 180bhp and needed a new turbo. So new turbo bought it gets mapped again this time reaches 220bhp which is still 10 less than it started with 6 month ago. Ive been told now that it needs new coil packs as it keeps misfiring when you turn the boost up. When i asked the mapper if it could reach 300 he said maybe just under but I've been told to expect 320- 330 from others so i can't quite understand what is going on I've spent so much money now and lost horsepower i need help! Why am i getting such little horsepower?!

Car is WRX Impreza 1994 JDM

My car has:

.front mounted intercooler

.new spark plugs

.K&N induction kit

.440 yellow injectors

.3inch Exhuast

.New TDO5 turbo

Are these guys at eurospec recommended by anyone, if so they should know what they are doing, only asking as I don't know whose good and who's not, do you have an afr gauge/was it showing lean/rich during misfire, I know running a spark plug gap too big for your desired boost can cause a misfire as the boost can actually stop the spark jumping the gap

That part list on a healthy wrx is 300hp + all day .

As Geoff said a compression test would rule out bore wear /failure.

Even brand new Standard single classic coil packs will struggle to spark reliably at 1.3 bar.

Pre v3 map sensors will only operate up to 1.2 bar (and then hit boost cut)

Is it holding boost ?

As a leak from the inlet ,fmic pipework or upipe/downpipe can cause a drop in power .

Have you uprated the fuel pump ?

If it's not broke .....upgrade it 😊

Yes the fuel pump is a RCM.

There was an issue with the boost not holding I'm assuming the new turbo i got fitted fixed that as the horsepower improved from 180 to 220.

All he said was it could be coil packs and once i asked if the car could reach 300bhp his reply was just under but would be risky which makes me think something must be going wrong because as you say it should be easily making 300.

As for Eurospec i have heard good things and good things about my mapper Ben.My brothers Evo 10 has been going there for years. They seem a really professional place and i would hate to think they are taking advantage.

Generally if it's a misfire it will make boost and hold it but it cuts and the rr results will show a "blip" in the graph .

His choice of wording "it won't hold boost " makes me think it's either ..... "blow by " rings are worn letting boost into the sump . Valves are not sealing properly letting boost escape through the ports of the head .

Or hopefully the cheaper option a boost leak after the turbo, ie fmic pipework or joiners leaking boost . This is normally easily spotted on a dyno as when under load you'd hear a shhhh or whistling noise.

Ask them to do a compression test on the engine and smoke test on the intake to rule out the above

My brvs v1sti ,mine and 2 wrx's that belong to friends all make over 330hp with pretty much the same mods .

Yours should have about 260 hp standard [emoji6]

If it's not broke .....upgrade it 😊

right situation update is my car is running 220 mapped on a simtek ECU the reason the hp is so low is because whenever Ben tries to map it at high boost it misfires which he says he has seen before and its coil packs as mine seem to have been in the car for 22 years..... so I'm heading back to get 4 new coil packs and remapped next week which hopefully gets it hitting 300.

Minor issue at the moment is when i pull up at lights or in traffic in first the Revs will sit on 2000 now and again like i have my foot slightly on the accelerator and i can actually pull away lifting off the clutch without using my right foot at all because the car is already sitting on 2000 its pretty weird anyone know whats up? it has only done it since the map

Sounds like it's making boost , blowing the spark out and missing. Instead of not holding boost because it's leaking then . Which is what mine did before the newage coil pack conversion but then You could see mine missing on the dyno .As it made boost, then cut boost , the afr rich'ned and then it made boost again

Classic single coil packs are prone to cracking around the mounting holes and the insulation getting brittle due to over tighening, heat and age . So your better off buying new ones or doing a newage coil pack conversion, rather than buying second hand imo .

If it's misfiring on idle sometimes I think the ecu increases idle to stop it stalling. Cos when I accidentally plugged my front and rear coil packs in back to front [emoji16]

It run as ruff as a bears ar5e, spat flames and idled at 2k , I was surprised it run at all tbh lol

Hopefully the stronger spark will sort it [emoji41]

And if it does I'd keep the old turbo as it probably wasn't the issue in the first place [emoji6]

If it's not broke .....upgrade it 😊

  • 2 weeks later...

Does the ECU use IACV duty cycle? Sounds like the IACV needs bringing down to stop the 2000rpm issue.

FWIW, Ben is a good tuner.. He teaches the PGMFI Acdamy..

Also just bear in mind 300bhp on Eurospec's rollers is 320 on most others. The Dyno is a tuning tool, They all read slightly different, Some are heart breakers some are generous.

I'm unsure what the ecu uses for it's readings tbh (I'm just a spanner monkey )

When running right These early classics make 260 hp @ 0.7 bar and the standard tdo5 16g they're fitted with will run @1.4 bar .

So if the engines in good order and the right supporting mods are in place it should make 300 hp @ the fly fairly easily.

So I assuming it's something mechanical holding it back hopefully the stronger spark has sorted it .

Always Glad to hear positive feedback about new mapping choices .

I use Clive attowe he's not a "scooby specialist " but he's mapped plenty of em in his 25yr + experience.

If it's not broke .....upgrade it 😊
