At face value this one seems the best of the lot not tinkered with much full history 1 f keeper , checked mot history no rust problems yet not that that means their isnt , just trying to pick out the best one to see cause they're all hellish drives away

Yeah mate that one looks the part I’d go see that too if I were you. Have a scan through YouTube I’m sure there’s a few video telling you how to check for rust There is a few common areas but as you say it’s not gonna be perfect being a 15 year old car good luck mate 👍

You need to go see it. The descriptions sounds like a good start. Tbh if you did not know what a PPP version was you need to do more research before buying. The best thing about buying a car far away is you get to drive it back which is always great fun in good one of these.

Yeah mate I'm planning to go see it Monday, I've been looking at a few videos of what to look for like signs of regular fluid changes, residue on oil cap burnt fluid smells etc , check for clear brake fluid? Check for rust everywhere any knocking sounds on test run check suspension for play & steering wheel. Check for engine movement at a.stand still? Erm exp tank leaks any oil leaks. Anything to add gents?

An oh yes siluro especially cause I've not driven one before driving through the borders will be fun😈. Though therell be that paranoia innmy mind listenin out for noises an waiting for a lamp to come on 🙄

Good luck. Cold the engine will be lumpy but will sort it self out.. The drive train is quite noisy but without comparing to others tricky to know. Noisier than most cars.

All subarus I have owned have always have a stutter on tick over which is regular so that is normal.

Rear suspension design has a known issue which produces a knocking sound as shocks wear. Can Be fixed by greasing or new shocks. Common issue on salons of this mileage. Not sure on wagons but maybe worth asking. Not a big deal though.

Oil change intervals etc... One owner sounds like it could be well looked after and they should know everything about the car.

Only other stuff I can think of is check the p/s pump for leaks check fuel filler neck for rust you can see it from the rear wheel arch make sure you get a good stamp on the brakes aswell to check for any sign of the front callipers starting to seize not a big problem but best to know in advance so you can factor it in to price. Good luck mate let us know how you get on. Ohh and if you can try and get a 5 min cruise on the motorway to see if the P0420 code comes up you got a wee scan tool?

Cheers lads wouldn't have known where to start with one of these, I've been on the dirty diesel crew a few yr now ,might miss that mpg now though Haha. Worst case it blows up on the way back then what?😅 should their be any tapping at all while listenin in bonnet open? Or just your belt noises etc, can i tell by giving her a rock? Should be firm I'm guessing?someone mentioned watch for steering wheel rattling while idling what would that mean? Only problem siluro it's a sales court maybe they have previous owners details?

Be sure to check that rosscosm no warning emergency stop🤣 I don't have the tool mate no what would that mean? And wouldn't it throw a dash light up? One more thing do these cars need to be babied or can you give em a bit within reason obviously. Gonna need a few quid for juice money on the way back all goes well east Lothian to bury an back rosscosm you in Scotland?

Just been reading from another thread someone similar situation to me, hatchback 08 109.000 on clock someone said unless you dont mind big Bill's for the engine rebuild with those miles unless it's already been done??? What😱

Not really you can hear a wee bit of ticking from the injectors but nothing mega noticeable. It’s inefficient catalytic converter mate it will throw check engine light. They are fairly happy with a bit of spirited driving mate as long as you do it right make sure it’s up to temp properly (not just coolant gauge) first and don’t go planting your foot at low revs, don’t go full bore launches every time you set off. Wee bit of mechanical sympathy and don’t drive it like a muppet and all is fine🤣 yeah mate I’m in Scotland

Yeah I know bit mad eh mate I went and looked at a nice Hawkeye before I got mine but after hearing 2.5L horror stories put me off.

Ok mate I'll listen out for that, is the cat a dear job if it does come up? But then again I wouldn't know without the doohicky. So get her running for 5 10 mins or so before ya get goin, no muppet driving an itll all be good ,great advice their sir Haha. From what I can gather it's not a good idea to put these in your average garages? Or depend what for Like faults an what not? Shame cause I've a garage just down the road.been with a few yrs good honest lads, hafto ask if any have any scooby exp.ah right it's the 2.0 2.5 thing right that's what hes talkin about I thought !Removed! that then paying 4 k for a car then rebuilding the engine 🤣 I ain't money bags. **** I used to pay 400quid for a motor run into the ground scrap it same again next yr lmao

Yes mate let it heat up then drive normally for a bit so the oil temp and gearbox and diff oils get up to temp before booting it. Depends on what for mate I’d be happy getting like brakes etc at a normal but good mechanic. But anything like timing or more in-depth stuff I’d want a specialist. A lot of subaru owners do basic servicing theirselves there’s so many how to guides for these motors. With the cat it depends on what has went wrong could be 02 sensor on my last wrx I had a leak at down pipe which caused the code. Don’t worry about it too much any engine in any car can blow up if it’s not looked after. Just wait til you drive one though not a lot like them for the price out there. Buy with your head cause you will most likely fall in love with the driving experience lol

Right so that could be a ball ache depending on how far away the specialist is, closest I've found so far with a good rep is SW motorsport in penicuik, an I take it they're not cheap either lol, only thing close to me I found is octane tuning. I could probably tackle a service... got to admit though not a big fan of working on cars dont have alot of patience for it. Just a bit wary of a car that age got people my end tryin to put me off sayin I'm mad buyin one of them that age waiting to say I told you so🙄

It’s your decision really mate if you decide your serious about owning one then who cares what others say there’s always gonna be naysayers. Not sure what it would cost to get a mechanic to go see it with you best bet is to call Some and ask. There are a lot of Subaru’s out there man you don’t have to buy the first one you see 👍

Been kinda following this the past couple of days mate and buying a scoob is no different to buying any other 2nd hand car they all come with some problems also all these people who are trying to put you off have any of them ever owned and ran one of these cars? If not i would take what they saying with a pinch of salt, scoobs are really reliable cars as long as you keep on top of servicing and any other wear and tear items such as brakes etc and they are no more expensive in parts than any other manufacturer the 2ltr engine is a cracking engine so as long as you don't mind changing the oil every 5-6k then it'l all be ok, like the lads have said previously check for any rust especially around rear arches, sills and strut towers, get your hand in about the lip of the rear arch as all the s**t gathers there, make sure you warm up the engine before any spirited driving and then letting it cool down properly when you come to park up, what one was it that's in scotland and where is it about 👍

I told you not to go looking for horror stories cause you will find them, lol.

As Stuartie and Ross have said if you look after it it will look after you. Remember the type of car it is and how it attracts idiots that launch and hoon them constantly, no car will survive that at this price. Buy a Hellcat if you want to do that, drag car for the public roads.

Mine has a complete history and has never let any of the 3 owners down. I bought mine 3.5 years ago with only 28k on the clock, it now has 48k and never missed a beat. It has had an oil change every 3-4k never any longer, and all the fluids changed since I have had it. Biggest cost was getting cambelt changed which i paid scoobyworld to do, i do not fancy doing that in the street, plus i do not have the correct tools. I put new Goodyear Eagle asymmetric 3s on £100 per corner even though the Potenzas had plenty of tread they were over 6 years old. That was worth every penny. I have also rebuilt the rear calipers and replaced discs all round. Rear calipers were seized, another common issue with these, you can get rebuild kits from Godspeed.

As for mods all I have done is put some Brembos on the front with 330mm discs from Godspeed, not cheap but look good and stop much better than standard (not sti brembos do not fit under standard 17inch wheels), performance panel filter, Grimspeed AOS and had it mapped (£420). Car now has 270bhp. The torque figure is the most impressive at 345 lbs at just 3500 rpm ( i believe this is similar figures to the PPP). Transformed the car and is well worth it. I guess you need the 2.5 for these torque figures though. 

The car is great fun as a daily driver and now the only problem is finding something to replace it when the time comes. I guess I will have to just try a newer one, I do like the new WRX/STI.

Oh and the other thing to add is people are always positive towards a Subaru, everyone loves a Scooby it seems.
