I would look at the selector mechanism as you suggest - if it drives fine and reverse engages straight away that is where I would focus

a grand to take the engine out is a bit steep as it is quite straight forward and can be done quite quickly by experienced staff. do they mean they will be taking it out and stripping the unit down as part of the work or is that just lifting it out of the bay?
