I just used my fingers on mine - there shouldnt be a huge resistance - make sure you have your car in gear and hand brake off though ;)

check the thermostat hasnt failed before you pull the whole engine apart - the standard wrx engine internals should be good for that BHP figure although I would uprate the oil pump and fit a decent sump baffle

When the shocks went on my nissan it had the same symptoms however when MOT'd because of the uprated springs it passed the 'bounce' test
