Checked in with the mechanic who will be doing the CV boot in a couple of weeks..... He will also be replacing the unbranded cam belt with a cosworth item, replacing the water pump with a cast non cavitation wheel item and installing an uprated RCM oil pump.

Just too many unknowns for me - paranoia was too much, when I do hit the track ill be happier in myself 😀

Some used but working bits will be for sale in 3 weeks time 👍

I've had the wagon a few months now, and hit the 3000 mile mark.

I've changed the oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, cleaned the MAF sensor, and changed the oil.

Tomorrow is gearbox oil, rear diff oil, and coolant swap.

Gearbox oil is changed, rear differential oil is changed, I got zero swarf from the gearbox which I was surprised about, and very minimal tiny fillings from the rear diff.

No time for coolant today. I'm attacking that tomorrow.

I'm on a roll with the fluids so I may as well do the clutch, brakes, and power steering.

I've drained the coolant today, I used the radiator drain *****, took off the top hose, filled the rad with clean water and flushed it through a few times.

I've removed the thermostat housing and removed the stat to get the coolant out, and disconnected the heater core hose and flushed that through a few times.

I've removed the header tank and want to get it to look as new as possible.

Has anyone any tips on cleaning and restoring cast aluminium?

Coolant added today, I found lots of info about difficulty bleeding the system of air. But being a plumber helped.

I just filled the heater core and block through a funnel after disconnecting from the engine.

Filled the radiator through the top hose, topped the expansion tank to minimum, and filled the header tank a few times.

I decided to bleed the clutch cylinders too, and it got rid of my squeaky clutch pedal, and it feels much smoother.

Brakes tomorrow

Today in an effort to get more access to the top of the block to remove oil I poured this from my reservoir tank - not happy

And dropped the fluid from the radiator

Brakes bled, and new fluid added.

I decided to tackle my sloppy gearbox, I removed the UJ joint and looked for the bushings online.

I cant find any at a reasonable price, so I'm looking into fabricating something.

Removed the headlights on the Legacy and polished them up. Some sanding then compound followed by few coats of wax.

Gave this and the missus motor a good scrub up. Excuse the colour differences as taken on two different cameras. Need to get the front grill altered/painted and see if I cant do something with that paint scuff, been on there since I bought the motor.

I wasnt happy with my rusty discs showing after putting on new wheels.

So I soaked them in a citric acid bath for 4 hours and painted the centre sections gloss black.

The Mrs makes bath bombs and bubble bars, she had a 5kg tub. Its brilliant stuff

A word of warning though. If you use citric acid make sure you paint or rust protect any surfaces that will be on show as they will immediately rust again, if the come into contact with conditions to create rust.

Well the bug sti might be off to a new home soon 🥺 started to regret saying I'd ever sell it 🙄

So took the v1sti out for a little b road blatt to dust the cobwebs off and cheer me up .....

Even with the boost turned down to 1.3 bar she's a totally different "animal" and it's reminded me again of where my love of scoobies really does lie 😲😜🤪😊

Went to visit the STI hatch at the garage, confirmed HG failure also suspicious about the ticking noise from engine on idle - I thought was forged pistons but they pointed out it does not stop when engine up to temp. After cleaning all the oil off the block you can now see it is blowing from the back of the block as well as sump rim.

When timing cover was removed we found a single bearing roller had been used, now I have this installed on my 2.0 NA auto, which is fine for 150BHP tootling about but for the standard WRX STI this should be a double bearing as the forces are greater and the bearing can overheat

Pic with clear cover top right roller is what my last WRX STI came with and what I would expect to be in place.

Pic without cover shows my roller with a deeper recess due to only having a single bearing.

So upshot is - a full teardown, inspection and rebuild - see what parts are salvageable, hopefully not too much damage has been done, check for further compromises in quality sort out all the issues then I will have confidence when pushing on the track, unfortunately it means funds earmarked for oil cooler and surge tank have been diverted to sorting the basics.

Will continue the progress on the project thread

@Jay762 gutted for you bud , especially as you bought it on the understanding that you'd have a mechanically sound base for good power .

Thought it was supposed to be a high quality "subaru specialist " build with no expense spared? You haven't had it long ,can you send it back to the builder /seller ?

Sorry to hear that @Dan B89  glad to hear you could send it back and it hasn't put you off , best of luck with the hunt for a decent replacement 👍

@savage bulldogs it was however there are two things stopping me returning it to source, one I do not know the history between it leaving said tuner and me purchasing it, two given what has surfaced so far if corners have been cut and compromises made so far I would not want that repeated and be in the same position but more money.

Dependent on what is found when the engine is disassembled - products stated as used vs what is actually there, I may have course for recompense as it came from an independent dealer

We shall see - need to have everything documented as it unfolds otherwise it gives areas of ambiguity and therefore accountability could be disputed

I put the Wagon on a diet and removed the front sub frame, I've rust treated it and repainted it whilst it's out.

The feedback through the wheel felt a little different.

The gearbox mounting frame is also out, I'm going to rust treat that and respray it too.20190801_193137.thumb.jpg.047b15f865f7b6bac6715de9b288bc92.jpg

What rust treatment did you use?

I've cleaned and repainted the gearbox mounting bracket, and re-fitted.

The centre section exhaust looked grubby so I've removed that today, for a refurb, and found a hole in the Catalytic converter.

It was very small, and on the edge, so I've just cleaned and converted the rust, and filled it with high temperature mastic.

There are no O2 sensors after it so I'm not concerned.

I decided to fire it up and listen to the exhaust.

It sounded like a top fuel dragster.
